I live within driving distance of the city . . . I go to the 2nd hand stores every week, and find the books sections have lots of books, and sometimes what I need (so far for CLEP, though). There are also 2 large 2nd hand book stores that are within driving distance.

It may be worth looking into in your area, as an option, before doling out cash. Also, sometimes students are willing to sell their books, and post on the school bulletin boards.
