Name: EDU 153: Social Foundations of Education
Subject: Education
Semester/Term: Fall 2 - 2024
Instructor: Courtney Boma
Long or Short?: Long - 97.5 hours. Many people could finish this in less time; see my notes below.
Number of Milestone Activities: 5
Type of Milestone Activities: Essays and reflections.
Type of Final Assessment: Portfolio:11+ pages in papers, 20 hours of classroom observation
Notes & Overall Thoughts: The class includes a ton of outside resources, and it’s not always clear what is expected to be consumed for the class and what is just for optional enrichment. Those who are hardcore CBE fans could probably skip a lot of it; I ended up reading/viewing most of it. (I particularly enjoyed these topics, so I didn’t mind investing the time, but others could easily be more judicious by viewing the milestone requirements first and planning accordingly.) Boma generally took 3 days to grade milestones. This class does require 20 hours of classroom observations.
Name: EDU 210: Introduction to Pedagogy
Subject: Education
Semester/Term: Spring 1 - 2025
Instructor: Courtney Boma
Long or Short?: Long
Number of Milestone Activities: 7
Type of Milestone Activities: Essays, Lesson plans, etc. This does require a video recording of “teaching” a lesson.
Type of Final Assessment: Portfolio with elements similar to the milestone activities. Notes & Overall Thoughts: There were so many milestones in this one, but they were all pretty short and simple, individually. A couple of them build on one-another, so it helps if you've already received feedback on prior milestones before continuing (I know some people don't care about that). I didn't have real students to teach for my video lesson, so I just pretended and that was fine. This class requires 6 hours of classroom observation, but there is an online video option for those unable to do in-person observations.
Name: EDU 287: Teaching Students With Special Needs
Subject: Education
Semester/Term: Spring 1 - 2025
Instructor: Sam Hiscoe
Long or Short?: Short-Medium (I spent around 12 hours on this class.)
Number of Milestone Activities: 3
Type of Milestone Activities: Papers
Type of Final Assessment: Papers, Mock Interview
Notes & Overall Thoughts: This was one of the simplest, most straightforward classes I've taken at UMPI. It was certainly the fastest EDU class, too. Also, it did *not* require any observation hours, which was a nice break. Note: The feedback from Hiscoe had nothing to do with my work; seemed to be a copied/pasted reiteration of the lesson; however, it was returned within 1-2 days.
