I would take the energy, time you have to complete the cheapies and freebies options in subject matter that interest you, such as the Coursera, TEEX, Sophia.org, and whatever else, like the EdX ones. You're just preparing to transfer the max alternative credits to an institution of choice, do the transfer after you have your answer from them, it should stop you from continuing your learning and accumulation of credits towards that balanced trifecta of certs, degree, experience.
They should definitely ask. I agree that the alt credit providers might be OK, but people get student visas to attend unaccredited schools all the time, which makes me think even alt credit "freebies" might count as being a student. I wouldn't assume that it's all right, it could trip them up right when they don't need it.
