In Illinois, only RA/NA with a licensure track (which includes either practicum/internship, or supervised hours) will lead to licensure. I am at 250K in student loans for all those nice degrees I have. My eventual plan is to start a consulting/life coach business from home in holistic psychology. Here is why. I am a school psychologist. I routinely send kids to the psychiatric hospital for evaluation (suicidal/homicidal ideation/transgenderism/depression). They are in there anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks. They are sent out "stabilized" and on medication. Medication doesn't work or they won't take it. They see therapists once a week. One month later we are in the same situation. If you do a little reading, psychiatric meds are not that effective. Under my license I can do private practice with children birth to 22 years old (and their parents) who are in a K-12 program. I would like to offer drugless (somatic/overcoming negative or destructive thoughts/art/music/orthomolecular) approaches. Therefore, I would like more education in this area, whether I have to research it myself, or take the classes. Does that help?
Here's a member that followed through with my recommendations, Supermind did the BALS-Psych, (TESU AS Math & Psych Cert was included as it's free on route to the BALS), Walden MS Psych, PSY CHI Society. Supermind is a coach for health/wellness and needed/wanted to have credentials to back that up, he's now looking for Doctoral/PhD studies. I've told him the exact same thing I am telling you... Look for NA/RA or internationally accredited programs as these are recognized, find the ones that match your budget, learning medium, time, etc, Before he started this path, he consulted a professor/PhD in his native India, but ultimately did go with my suggestions instead of that PhD/Professor from India...
Erasec63 Wrote:Also, why does non-accredited automatically mean it is a degree mill? I don't think 4 years of study is a degree mill. I posted about my friend. I guarantee her education is as good or better than the accredited cosmetology schools. She is doing nothing different than the accredited schools. What they are doing is making her spend thousands of dollars on conferences, inspection, consultants, rewriting the syllibi, etc. It's a multi-sided view, you're looking at things one way, others are looking at it differently... non-accredited doesn't necessarily mean they're a diploma mill, but, after a few organizations have deemed the institution as a degree/diploma mill, it sticks. Institutions start from somewhere, unaccredited ones may be very good at what they teach, etc, but ultimately, there has been no review on their processes/policies, etc. As I used Supermind as an example, he also looked for Masters/PhD, I mentioned to him Walden MS Psych as it's RA instead of any similarly priced NA or state approved/unaccredited program because it's accredited. In the long run, people find out where you've got the degree, don't be that time bomb...
