Lucky for them, a former Google employee (who was on good terms with the company) actually snapped it up and was the owner of Google.com for a few minutes while it was all being resolved.
They paid the former employee $6,006.13 ("GOOGLE") for his trouble. For as big of a catastrophe as that could have been, $6k is peanus.
Wow, they really did get off lucky there. That could have cost them an arm and a leg.
