Your community college obviously is a testing center (where credits can be sent anywhere) but that particular community college only takes so many hours (15 or 18). In fact, most community colleges have a very restricted clep-acceptance agenda because many of its degrees are associates! It's not just discrimination for CLEPs but on APs as well. It's just harder at a community college in respects to testing out.
Most of the large, public universities will take between 30 and 60 hours. It's usually around 45 or so, give or take, depending on what degree you are going for, minimum scores, and correspondence classes in addition to CLEPs can affect the number taken...usually private universities will not accept CLEPs without some sort of substantial program or scores.
I go to a university that has a VERY generous CLEP policy. I mean the maximum - between 55 and 60 credits, for a bachelors, taken by CLEP & correspondence. (Sometimes that number is combined, other times separated for either minimization or maximazation by the school)
Good luck on your classes. Remember, ANY progress is better than no progress! So even if you can only afford/can CLEP out a few, it's wayy better than sitting there an extra full semester of classes on stuff you know you can do well on!
(p.s. most of the people on this board belong to online/correspondence universities such as Thomas Edision, EC, etc - i do not belong to one of these but I do deal with more than 4 "physical" universities for my degree, if you need help with advisors, councelors, rules, loopholes, I'm here for you! We're all here to help you!)
