Definitely agree that a Groupon cert/MBA doesn't scream quality, but our issue back then was sifting through fresh uni grads' resumes that sometimes featured elements such as shirtless photos taken in the applicant's rear-view mirror. Teaching experience followed by even these certificates definitely made entry-level applicants stand out, giving at least the suggestion of a focus on professional development.
I can say that the one I did was a so-so supplement to the years of teaching experience I already had at that point, and it absolutely does not prepare you for classroom instruction. Then again, I'd argue that most online-only, non-practicum programs don't. I also saw reviews of some other Groupon certs back then that were bizarrely full of Christian theology in their exercises, so do some due diligence. Either way, I'd still recommend a CELTA/DELTA as a better standard of quality for people who are really looking into international education.
