For the most part, no, it's not advisable to consult with your advisor. They are extremely unhelpful when it comes to non-TESU courses. It's always a good idea to look up ACE recommendations yourself before attempting a course, however. This is also why people here post warnings about expiring courses. If you finish a course before it expires, you should still be good.
