See my response to your PM. I am not (by far!) an accounting/finance major, but to answer your question at a high level...no they are not the same altho' IMO you need a basic understanding of Managerial Accounting (day to day accounting acitivites) in order to do Financial Accounting (preparing and interpreting Financial Statements (Income Statement/Balance Sheet, Cash Flow etc).
In my POF exam specific feedback I identify a book:
"If you're clueless about accounting and finance and want to know more"

It's an awesome book for the corporate financially uninitiated (like me)!
It tells you in plain English what it's all about and it does it in a small sized book of less than 200 pages (vs a full-sized, 900-page school text book!). You can always use the 900-pager for reference but I love this little book cos' it speaks to me in a language I can understand! I found it at a local bookstore and used a coupon.
