Empire State College-Anyone?
#8
floppydee Wrote:Thanks Ann, I too attended a SUNY community college, I have 50 credits and I have been stuck there for a year now! My son got sick and I had alot of stuff going on in life, so I stopped attending some classes, and now I have 2 F's and lost my financial aid. I actually owe my CC like 2K now! OMG! I have been there for like 4 years now, and completely in debt!! Trying to go to classes that you "need" to fulfill the GER's are ridiculous! Especially for a working mother, when the classes you need are during the day!

Anyway I REALLY wish I knew about all this testing and other schools years ago! I am just trying to barely make it through this semester and then I am going to make some serious changes! I am still not sure the "value" of one of these degrees, meaning how they stand up against other schools when sending out resumes and doing job interviews and such.

So good luck to you!!

DeAnna had excellent advice. I wanted to add that all of the big three hold the same regional accreditation as the highest of the highest colleges in the united states. In other words, the big three are real.
Since 54% of those who start college will NEVER FINISH (ever), the question for many "return" students is more about finishing. Is it better to have an unfinished degree from somewhere than earning/completing/finishing a degree from one of the big 3?

The other thing to think about is not necessarily the utility of the degree, but the major, because I think that is HUGE and overlooked. Respectfully, a person with an AA in social sciences isn't gaining an employment edge over anyone really. (not like an associates in business or career/trade occupation- which directly benefits you and plants you firmly into a job) You can see, my BA is in social science, so I am not slamming the field LOL! But, there isn't a "job" that I can walk into because of earning this degree. It isn't specific enough- and it isn't high enough- for real career training. That said, art degrees are great stepping stones, and graduates from the big three have had not trouble using their regionally accredited degrees as stepping stones into graduate programs- and/or PhD programs where you do become an expert in your field.
(she nervously writes while awaiting acceptance from two schools that has not yet come  )

So, in the end, it all boils down to "what do you want to do with your degree?" and only after you have a clear idea of where you want to go, can you really decide on how to get there in the right way. I hope that was helpful and received in the warm manner I intended it.
