I too would like to know this. I would love to work on my course work for 6 months, and then enroll and work for another 6 months "officially". That would be a good speed for me.
If you are a new student, they give you access on the 15th of the month prior to the start of your term. You can start working, though you can't take official tests (you can take pre-assessments), record videos, or turn in assignments. That's what many of us do. I did my non-capstone courses in 1 month, from October 15-November 14, though my term officially started on November 1. When the term started, I had papers to turn in for 2 classes, was ready to take the exam for 1 class, and had the paper written but not the video recorded for another class.
I saw some people on the WGU Facebook group asking for assignments so they or someone else could start working on them before having access. To me, that's kind of like cheating (it definitely violates policy for those handing out the assignments), and also you run the risk of having the assignment changed before you activate the course. During my time several courses were updated, but I don't know if they change the assignments at all. A number of the assignments had "supporting documents" that gave more detail that you would also need to complete the assignment appropriately.
