The CSU & UC systems here in CA only 3 courses, unless you can score a 3 on an AP Language exam, and then you don't need any. The Big 3 and WGU require 0. Those are just examples, but 16cr (quarter?) is a ridiculous amount to have to do.
Second, a 68 on the CLEP is not an unusually high score. ACE requires that you score 50 to pass and get 6cr (semester) and that you get a 63 to be able to get 9cr (3 semesters), so a 68 is not way out of whack with that.
I would suggest that you either put in a lot of time and effort, using multiple sources and methods, to try to get a 68 on the CLEP, or else you're going to have to spend money and time taking 4 language courses somewhere.
BYU-IS has German for $752/course, so $3008 for all 4 courses - and you can take them as quickly as 3 weeks each I think. Unfortunately, they don't offer any other languages that have 4 semesters worth (which is weird, but whatever).
Rio Salado is $215/cr x 4cr + license = $902 x 4 = $3,608, and they give you the option of rolling start dates (every Monday), and 8-week accelerated courses. You can take Spanish, French, German, ASL, Arabic, Latin, Japanese, & Mandarin.
I'm sure there are other options out there, you're just going to have to dig deep.
Yeah I thought I misunderstood the requirements for a long time and I remember making two appointments with the advisors but I can assure you its 16cr hours. Whoever put together the course requirements really wanted people to master a language as a requirement. A bit too bias if you ask me. They require BS in Physics majors to have 16 cr hours as well and music majors!
I know for 16cr hours a 68 is right in line with what you should need but I feel every point after 60 gets very hard on the clep.
BYU-IS is not listed as an acceptable transfer college but their physical locations are so that would require manual approval. Is BYU-IS super easy or something because who can legit pass German in three weeks?
I think many people who take the CLEP language exams score 63+ on them, it's not impossible by any stretch. For anyone I know who wants to go to school, and they are fluent in Spanish, I always tell them to take the CLEP, and so far, every one of them has scored at least a 63 (at least 5 people).
BYU-IS wouldn't necessarily be "listed" (I've never heard that you have to be on a particular list to get transferred - I can't imagine that your school has a list of 2000+ schools they will take credits from!). But I think the courses come in on a BYU transcript, so it shouldn't be a problem.
As for ease, I'm not saying that everyone could pass in 3 weeks, I just know that there is a minimum amount of time that they require you to be in the course. For someone who took a foreign language in HS, I can imagine that they might be able to quickly pass the first and maybe even 2nd semester of that language in college.
