It totally depends on where you live. CA is a big state, you can't say something about the entire state like that, because it just isn't true.
My teacher friends in the Sacramento area earn upwards of $70k. That is plenty to live a decent life there. I have teacher friends in North San Diego county who make more than that, they have pretty nice houses. If you live in Fresno or Redding or just about anywhere other than LA or the SF Bay area, you are fine with a teacher's salary. Even then, you only need to go out to the suburbs to be able to afford a house.
And by the way, not a single one has ever complained to me that they don't make enough money. None.
