Rethinking the big 3
#21
I am not sure I'm going to call CTC and check right now. I have to agree on getting this business major instead it's cost effective and not much more to go.. In fact I'm on study.com and almost done with business 309 barely started it this morning.
TrailRunr Wrote:Is it possible to teach in California with a BSBA instead of the BALS? It seems to be possible with any other degree, but they have some verbiage about "any BA other than professional education".

I would agree you don't want to get stuck with a BA in Liberal Studies if you don't end up teaching. IMHO, Cali school districts don't pay enough considering the cost-of-living.

I have a friend who just got her teaching credential and she had a Marketing degree. In CA, you can have any Bachelor's degree to get a credential. Now, you may be more limited on what you can teach (for example, if you're a history major but want to teach high school math, you're going to have problems unless you take additional steps). But, it depends on what you want to teach, and which credentialing program you end up in.

I believe I'd have to pass the CSET in the subject I want to teach or the multiple subjects in elementary for k-6.. then do the program that is appropriate for credential.. it's the same path for liberal studies degree.. it used to be that if you had a liberal studies degree you didn't need the CSET now everyone has to take it which makes me feel like that degree is pointless since I'm still stuck taking that test .. in fact sometimes if you have a. Specific degree in a subject you can bypass it which makes business even more tempting..

Pay is good if you have your masters I'm sure not as good as Business but tops out about 107,000 a year with full benefits and a pension.
#25
Also if you teach in high school and give up your prep time they will give you another 17,000 a year. There is programs for buying houses half off out here too for teachers and loan forgiveness if you teach for so long in a low income school.

It totally depends on where you live. CA is a big state, you can't say something about the entire state like that, because it just isn't true.

My teacher friends in the Sacramento area earn upwards of $70k. That is plenty to live a decent life there. I have teacher friends in North San Diego county who make more than that, they have pretty nice houses. If you live in Fresno or Redding or just about anywhere other than LA or the SF Bay area, you are fine with a teacher's salary. Even then, you only need to go out to the suburbs to be able to afford a house.

And by the way, not a single one has ever complained to me that they don't make enough money. None.

I'm in Modesto not far from Sacramento and I agree it's plenty to live on also not sure how many years your friend has been in but that's how the pay changes salary increases each year by steps so I'm betting she has not hit max yet what can make the difference is having a masters degree ..

Yes, you need 3 courses in the AOS, and all have to be UL. At least 1 has to be in either ACC or FIN.

Intro to Business has never been accepted for any degree as anything except a Free Elective.

Did you find out (via research) what degree you need for a credential program that you want? I would do that well before I would finish the BSBA, so that your option for the BALS is still open. It's easier to get the BALS and then go back for the BSBA than it is to get the BSBA, and then go back and get 24cr for the BALS (which you already have, so it would totally be a repeat).

I would do much research before finishing this program.
