That right there has been a problem some places I've been. Vet preference is all well and good, but it needs to be applied among those actually qualified for the job. The fact that some spots automatically bump any vet into 'most qualified' bugs me to no end. I had a place tell me that I'd be an automatic hire for a senior mechanic position when I have absolutely no experience in the job.

Sorry, rant over, going back to my textbook now...

It's a controversial thing to say, and I have several veterans in my family. I know that I worked for a security company that gave an Air Force veteran the operations management position at a new location even though he had no experience with running a company. He was ultimately fired because he didn't know what he was doing. But, while he was in place, he gave supervisory positions to people who were in the military. One of them, who was an E9, royally screwed up and was banned from the HQ of the government contract we had. They eventually learned their lesson and started promoting people based on previous supervisory experience in the civilian world and those who performed well at the company.

IIRC, I replaced a veteran who was demoted and turned out to be their longest lasting supervisor until I left for another job. One veteran was upset that he was never promoted, but he was also having relations with his mistress out in the parking lot. Then, there was the veteran who admitted to driving drunk and the police letting him go because he was a veteran. We also had a lot of non-veterans screw up. Employers just have to make the effort to figure out who is a good fit regardless of veteran status. If someone has security forces or military police experience, then I can see that as being a plus. If they were working in a non-law enforcement or non-security position, then their experience won't automatically translate to civilian criminal justice jobs. I like how Texas created a system to identify which military jobs are related to civilian jobs in order to make it easier to hire veterans for appropriate positions.
