8 papers? What's the word length / page length on them in general?

For the final, is there an essay, too?

SL English 1 & 2 don't have finals - I don't have word on the length of writing assignments yet, we're starting tomorrow.
You *can* get English 1 & 2 without any writing if you take the CLEP English Comp (without essay) and DSST English Advanced
