Using scholar.google.com as a search engine is free. In most cases it only provides abstracts. If an article has a free full text version on the internet, Google Scholar will point to that. All of the hits it provides have an option to download the citation in various formats. I don't edit the APA citations it provides and so far haven't lost any points. In most cases, I can find enough free full text articles. Sometimes I can't and use my school's online library to get the full text articles.
I prefer Google Scholar to my library's academic search engines. The problem with my library's search engines is that I'm not always able to get the full text even on publications for which my library has full access.
