I usually browse through the critically-acclaimed section of Netflix. I looked at the plot for Room 237 a couple of times, but skipped over it. When I was looking at the lists for the best movies of 2013, Room 237 came up. So I decided to give this movie a try. It's a "critical theory" documentary that looks for symbolism and hidden messages in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. I thought it could be interesting because I like movies that make you think.
Oh. My. Goodness. This documentary is dumb. The people who made the documentary interviewed regular people who have contrived the dumbest theories I have ever heard. They even see things in the movie that no one else can see. These people have issues. I'm assuming the documentary is not really about The Shining, it's about obsessive people who can find a pattern in anything or see what they want to see even if it isn't there. The documentary is not even entertaining in a "Let's laugh at these crazy people" kind of way. Funny or not, I think the makers of this film possibly exploited individuals who have mental and social disorders. If you have Netflix, you should at least watch it for a few minutes to see how ridiculous it is. I've watched a little over half of the film and am struggling to get through the rest.
