Room 237 - sanantone - 01-26-2014 I usually browse through the critically-acclaimed section of Netflix. I looked at the plot for Room 237 a couple of times, but skipped over it. When I was looking at the lists for the best movies of 2013, Room 237 came up. So I decided to give this movie a try. It's a "critical theory" documentary that looks for symbolism and hidden messages in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. I thought it could be interesting because I like movies that make you think. Oh. My. Goodness. This documentary is dumb. The people who made the documentary interviewed regular people who have contrived the dumbest theories I have ever heard. They even see things in the movie that no one else can see. These people have issues. I'm assuming the documentary is not really about The Shining, it's about obsessive people who can find a pattern in anything or see what they want to see even if it isn't there. The documentary is not even entertaining in a "Let's laugh at these crazy people" kind of way. Funny or not, I think the makers of this film possibly exploited individuals who have mental and social disorders. If you have Netflix, you should at least watch it for a few minutes to see how ridiculous it is. I've watched a little over half of the film and am struggling to get through the rest. Check out "A Necessary Death." Room 237 - sanantone - 01-27-2014 I will see if it's on Netflix this weekend or when San Antonio has its next "snow day." Room 237 - Lindagerr - 01-27-2014 I have come to the conclusion that a great chunk of Americans are stupid about anything that does not apply to them directly. I was at the Dr's office today and they had that annoying health whatever that runs in an endless loop. Today they talked about giving your average Joe off the street a health test. People didn't know what the names for the two parts of blood pressure, no one knew if 120/80 was good or bad and no one knew many other things I thought they should know. It reminded me of the Jay Leno part where he did his Jaywalking asking people on the street random questions. I hate most reality shows but I must admit Survivor is my guilty pleasure. A couple of seasons ago they had someone with appendicitis taken off the island to see if he needed it removed, one stupid girl asked "Can you live without your appendix?" I don't understand how these people can graduate high school when they don't know $hit about anything. I am definitely am not the brightest bulb in the bunch when I hang out with my husband and his best friends(all with genius IQ's)but I just don't understand how anyone can get along in life with so little interest in the world around them. OK my rant for the day Room 237 - dposborne - 01-28-2014 I watched about 15 minutes of the documentary a while back and turned it off to watch "Jack Ass: Bad Grandpa" a far superior movie... All sarcasm aside, Room 237 was a really weird movie. I couldn't get past the 15 minute mark... Why would an average person know or need to know anything about blood pressure numbers? Sick people, people caring for sick people, yeah. But hopefully the average person isn't sick or caring for someone who is sick. Room 237 - sanantone - 01-28-2014 I do have to admit that I only know about this stuff because 1. I took a health science course instead of the generic health course in high school. 2. I took anatomy and physiology as an elective in high school. 3. I used to do health screenings. I wouldn't say the people in this documentary were stupid; they were just obsessive and maybe a little mentally ill. I hope I don't offend anyone, but I got the impression that some of them might have been on the autism spectrum. Room 237 - Tedium - 01-28-2014 I was really excited about that documentary, as well. I was also equally as depressed when I started watching it. I'm not sure if I got half way or not, but I know I turned it off pretty quick. Really disappointing. Room 237 - Lindagerr - 01-28-2014 When I first responded to this thread I was just responding to what I consider a drop in the average IQ of the general US public. The reason everyone should understand what the blood pressure numbers mean is because even if you seem healthy and feel fine unknown high blood pressure can cause problems in every part of the body if not treated early. That is why blood pressure is called the silent killer. Many people do get signs or symptoms that are not severe and could be attributed to other things and don't follow up until it is too late. Several years ago when I was still in my 40's and only a couple of pounds over weight I started having bloody noses that would come on out of nowhere and were hard to stop. I have been prone to bloody noses since I was a teenager and hit by a car landing on my face. So I ignored them, one day I was driving and it was so bad I couldn't get it to stop and I was near my Dr's office so I went in. It turns out my blood pressure was something like 220/150 I could have blown at any time. So I guess I expect people to pay attention to those things. My point though was that people don't want to know what is going on in the world some people don't listen, read or watch the news at all. We are all here on this one earth together and we should know what is happening. Of course we are all more prone to paying attention to what is going on nearby, but shouldn't we know when something major is happening anywhere in the world. I can bet you that donations came in from all over to help the victims of tropical storm Sandy. I am from NJ but I wonder how many people who benefited from those donations even have the foggiest idea where the places are that those donations came from. The world is shrinking in many ways as people connect to others from all over using the internet and social media, but some people are using the internet just to play games( I do that too) and to put up pictures of themselves doing stupid things ( I avoid this at all cost) but they never bother to use the internet to learn about and connect to the rest of the world BTW I have not seen this documentary so I am not sure what you are trying to say. I work with mentally disabled and autisum spectrum children (and I have a 26 yr old one) so I will have to watch and see if I agree with your assessment. Room 237 - Tedium - 01-29-2014 I think she was just referring to the fact that these people were trying to fit together pieces of a puzzle that didn't belong together. They did not seem to have any training with critical theory and they just seemed to make the biggest deals out of the smallest, most insignificant things. It was like John Nash in A Beautiful Mind. To be honest, I would like to know what the point of the film was. I really am confused by it. I'm with sanantone in that I think the filmmakers were trying to highlight the people. Maybe the whole point is to get people with insane theories to talk about an insane movie. Who knows? If anything I would say paranoid schizophrenia would be my diagnosis, not any sort of autism. That's just my .02. |
