I wrote a paper in my IDS 101 class at COSC and subsequently had it published in a state wide law enforcement magazine. The editor of the magazine approached me about publishing it after he had read a copy of it given to him by his friend. I have received many requests for copies of that paper by many agencies and companies both in and outside of Texas prior to it being published. I really didn't think that paper was all that special, but my agency has used it for research justification for a major budget line item. I'm glad it was useful for others. So my thought is, if you want to have your paper published, more power to you, just one more credit to add to your resume / CV. As it was already pointed out, the complete rights to that paper are yours unless you assign them to someone else.
