You are going to have to study for either. Start with one course, if you are leaning toward CLEP (or SL) go that route and find out if that method works for you.
I started with SL simply because I got my registration in before the proctored exam requirement. I might have started with a CLEP otherwise. This is working for me, and I'm gaining the confidence that I have what it takes to study and CLEP or DSST out of the rest.
If you are still on the fence, pick up the textbook (look on the syllabus) for a SL class and start reading. You can find the books used on Amazon or Ebay for under $10. Your advance reading will help whether you SL or CLEP. Just jump in and start.
