Love the idea; I am actually a custom/estate jewelry fiend! If you have a local jewelry exchange (in NJ there is usually a site with about 30-60 dealers and jewelers/jewelry makers under one roof) you might want to talk to either the dealers or one of the jewelers in the back shops...they can usually get you any stone near cost. You can also call around to the large pawn shops in your area. This is where I find the majority of estate pieces. Also check ebay, sellers of estate sales are in abundance. Just be sure the seller has excellent feedback and use credit card through paypal this way if they try to get over you can always send back and do a chargeback.
FYI, years back I purchased quite a few pieces from a shop in texas, the name was fiestabell or fiestapawn something like that. Excellent quality pieces.
