College Plus
#11
I know quite a few people who probably never would have done it this way without CollegePlus just because they feel they need someone official to tell the what to do. Plus a lot of people need the accountability to counter distractions when all your studying is done on the big ol' internet. But....most of us don't need it and CP can be really inefficient (besides the fact that they're absurdly expensive). I told someone doing CP about FEMA and when they talked to me about it later it was apparent their "coach" had no clue what it was. I've currently got one person convinced not to do CollegePlus who was going to and we've had a lot of fun figuring out which tests to take next and all that stuff together.

I heard about this type of college work through CP and will be forever grateful to them, but after reading every word on their website, my mom and I decided there was no way in heck that we needed to pay them their outrageous fees just so that they could read off a little "plan" for us and talk to TESC. We even went to a homeschool conference a few years ago that he was at. We listened to a few of his seminars and talked to people at the booth. My mom talked to him and asked, "so why do we need your help for this?" and he said promptly, "you don't." Well then.

I know someone who is doing it through CP, and as far as I know they liked it, but she was never a very motivated person. A good friend is doing CP Prep despite my best efforts to dissuade her parents (I offered to do the same thing for approx. 1/5 of the price, to no avail.) I think they are considering doing CP.

Some people think it's worth it to avoid the hassle. That's fine for them, I am perfectly willing to deal with a little hassle and save several thousand $$.

I gotta jump in here and say I'm a CP student and I love it! I would not be at the point I'm at without CP. They introduced me to all the testing out, TESC and all that good stuff. I am so relieved I found out about it because I was literally going to start taking classes at the community college up the road. O_O So glad I got out of that. Wink Anyway, now that I've been in CP for a year I'm starting to want to break away and do it on my own. Because I've seen that it is possible from this forum. I think I'll encourage my friends (and siblings!) to try to do it on their own at first but if it's too much than do CP.

Honestly, sometimes I get tired of CP/my coach because it seems like they have one way to do things and it's the only way to do it. After checking out the IC forums I found that there were other tests that I could do, tons of resources I never heard of and just different options that I never thought I could do... Like the FEMAs for example. I have no idea why they don't encourage them... IC has showed me that it's really not that hard to get a degree the non-B&M way.

But I don't regret doing CP. I would still be on like my 4th test if I was doing it all by myself. Having a coach keeps me pressured to study and do well. Otherwise I would slack off and take months on one test. I actually know someone who did CP Prep but isn't doing it anymore. He's still testing though but I don't think he's making much progress. His mom told me that she misses the accountability of having a coach. It is true though that if you're very self motivated and can work with the extra research than you don't need CP.

Just received an email from CP public relations saying she was aghast at my above posted experience and would like to know the advisor I spoke with so she can be sure it doesn't happen again.

I can't remember the name of the guy I spoke with. It might have started with a 'J', but I'm not at all confident of even that much. I was too annoyed by everything else and it was months ago.

I'm torn between:
Hey, maybe they are on the ball after all.:patriot:
Or
Holy smokes! Where did I put that tin foil hat?! They are tracking me...
:leaving: (<--- this is me going to look for that hat)

I figure since she is obviously reading this board, I don't need to email her too? Isn't that convenient?Big Grin

Well maybe just to say thanks for asking? Not sure of the etiquette for this...

When I came across CollegePlus, I had already started planning my degree though testing. I asked them a number of questions, found out what their services are, found out their price, and decided that I could do it myself and save a few thousand. I would definitely not pay over a thousand dollars for someone to make a plan for my degree, tell me what to do, and contact TESC for me. But that is me personally, that does not mean that they would not be a great help to someone else. Others may benefit from their services or, in fact, need someone to make a plan for them and provide support. I, however, am a do-it-yourself kind of person. I like to do things myself and I love making plans and researching. I am also quite motivated and self-directed. I planned out my degree and worked though it without any help, just a book (College Without Compromise) and the internet, not even this forum until I found it a few months back. I am glad that I did not use CP, but I would have liked to learn about this forum earlier. It is good that there are free, helpful resources and we do not have to pay CP unless we want to.

Now my younger brother wants me to plan his degree for him. Maybe I should start helping people plan their degrees and charge a few hundred dollars! That could be a good business. My entrepreneurial wheels are rolling... wait, I already have too many business ideas... how many businesses can one person run?! Maybe I should wait until I finish my degree, and then only start one business. Hmm... which one?

For anyone considering CP but undecided, I'll happily work with you here in the public forum to develop a degree plan and study schedule for TESC. It's one of my favorite things to do! Smile It's free to be here, you don't need to be an Instantcert subscriber to be in the forums.

If you'd like, you can set $1000 into a bank account and when you and I are finished, you can either:
a) send it to CP anyway and let them work with you more one on one
or
b) send it to your favorite charity.

I've been helped, and I like to help. The path to earning a degree via testing is well-worn, let those with an altruistic heart help you get started. If that doesn't work, you're not out anything. $0
CP can't say the same.

I've taught an hour and a half long class on this whole CLeP process and when people asked me about CP, I told them that it was a good program but that for the $4000, all the information I wanted from them, I could write down on a napkin in five minutes. I've got such great friends and y'all are so helpful, it would be foolish to spend that much money on it. Of course, there are others who don't have the same resources as I do and have money to spend. So have fun with CP, you who choose it. There's nothing wrong with it and they're great people over there (I spent a lot of time talking with them before I decided not to use them.). But that whole six weeks Bible study or whatever it is at the front threw me for a loop. I'm an ardent Christ follower but I wanted to pay $4000 for CLeP test help, not devotionals.

So, good people all-in-all, entrepreneurs really, but an unnecessary service all together.

Mrs. DeRosa, can I ask if you are still helping out others here to plan their degree with TESC? I'm a mom of a homeschooled highschooler. We're getting rolling early on his degree with Cleps, Duel Enrollment, and such -and I'd love to have some council to see if I'm on the right track with planning. Thanks a bunch. Heather

Hahtjh- Cook is most definately still here and still helping anyone and everyone. She is wonderful! You will also find many other helpful people on this forum. Look around and start asking questions--you will get more help and info than you ever imagined.
They will tell you to "search" first since most questions have already been answered. Once you start looking around you won't be able to stop Smile.
Many homeschoolers, mom's of homeschoolers and adults doing the degree thing are here to help you. Welcome
PS you aren't w/ Riverbend by any chance??
