Hi all! I have a 17 yo daughter who I have finally convinced to try out studying for and taking a CLEP. She's a bright kid and is mature -- but she's a perfectionist and also has a fear of failing.I thought if she tried a CLEP that might put a little confidence under her belt.
I want this to be a positive experience for her, so could you recommend where to start? And don't suggest Algebra first because she's a math phobe!
PS - We don't have an actual plan for college enrollment yet. We just want to attempt a few of these and help her build her confidence.

There are a lot of different tests that are a little "easier" than others, but I find that it's most important to choose something that she's interested in. My DS is 15 and I wouldn't have started him off with Substance Abuse DSST because it's upper level. However, he wants to eventually be a pharmacist and it seemed like the closest fit. He loved studying for it and passed.
He has been studying for Intro to Computing for a while now because some recommend that teens start there, however it is boring him silly and I don't know when he'll be ready.
I just suggested that he study a little for Intro to Law Enforcement because I took it for my last three elective credits. It was interesting and fun, not to mention a pretty simple test. He's only been working on it for about a week now and is almost ahead of his 2 months of studying for Intro Computers, so I think he might even take Law Enforcement first.
What is she good at? If she likes math, the college math is high school level math. (Lol and I only scored a 53 on it.)
Also, keep in mind that some of the easier tests for adults may not be easy for kids. All of the business tests came pretty easily to me, but I don't know how kids pass them without a ton of study. It's a lot of jargon for someone that's never been in the business world, but then again, it depends on her interests.
I know that you'll get a lot of other opinions as well and there are also quite a few teens here that may post too.

why not have her study out of an REA book and use the practice tests provided? They provide 3, so she'd have a good idea of where she is before ever coming close to a CLEP.
AND, let her know that if she fails it's private. Even if she fails, that never appears on a transcript. Ever. No pressure, just a bit of cash.

That is me! It took me about a year to work up enough nerve to actually take the plunge into CLEP-ping! So glad I did though; I haven't failed one yet! (Though I very much hesitate to announce that, as I've got an ECE coming up in a couple of weeks...:o) Just let her over-study for a few, then she'll get into the groove of things.

If she likes reading at all, and is somewhat familiar with Shakespearean language, my suggestion would be Analyzing and Interpreting Literature. I took that one, and the old English Comp w/ essay as my first two tests. The English comp was nerve-wracking because I didn't get the score until a few weeks later, but A&I Lit was very exciting!
Good luck to her! (and be forewarned yourself: directed, perfectionist cleppers find that their time is completely consumed with studying! ... Well, I did anyway.  )

I am a perfectionist, too! I think that passing a CLEP will definitely give her more confidence. The great thing about CLEP exams is that you just need to pass, you don't have to get an A. (Unlike college courses where you do need to get an A - I've been working on those.:ack I agree with the above posters that she should start with a subject she likes. I would suggest starting with a subject that she is currently studying in high school - like U.S. History, English Literature, biology - any subject that she is interested in and doing well in. I started with English Literature and Chemistry because I liked those subjects and I had good grades in them in HS. Once she finishes studying that subject in HS, I would give her a CLEP study guide (REA is one) in that subject and have her continue to study the subject. She should also take some practice tests to get her confident for the real test. If she consistently gets 60% or more of the questions correct on practice tests, she should be able to pass the real test.

I would point her at a subject she likes and have her go beyond IC; make it her own. Also, 17 is a good age for social science and Sociology is a great starter.

I agree with purpleteen. For the 3 tests that I have taken I have supplemented IC with REA and Petersons and websites mentioned in the Specific Exam Feedback. Although, there are some people here who have passed tests with nothing but IC.....:willynilly:

Seeing that you haven't thought about your college choices yet, I'm going to second the sociology suggestion. I have seen several CLEP-o-phobic colleges that accept only sociology, biology, & calculus CLEPs (or some other combination.) Obviously taking a not-widely-accepted CLEP isn't going to do her any harm, but it might be a kind of expensive foray into confidence building :p I also recommend Analyzing & Interp. Literature, or maybe US History 1 (although is probably far and away more difficult than A & I Lit).
