I hate you ALEKS!!!
jeff Wrote:IrishJohn,

Did you use a textbook with the ALEKS Beginning Algebra course?
No. I did end up printing out a veritable textbook of ALEKS' "explanations" which helped.
Quote:What are your feelings about the course?
Hate it with a white-hot, all-consuming, never-ending, tear-inducing, someone-must-be-waterboarded-for-making-me-do-this kind of passion.

But I digress.

Oh I guess in fairness I should point out that I'm talking about math in general and not really ALEKS. Wink Probably the best way for math-haters like myself to complete the required credit.

Quote:Can a person complete this course even if they are weak in math skills?
Yes. Math has always been my weakest subject, which is ironic since I use math at work all the time. It's easier in the context of work rather than in a class or course environment, plus I don't usually have mind-numbing word problems at work in doing the math.

Quote:I have a math phobia and math was never one of my strong points.
I'm not only the president of that club but am a member! Big Grin

You can do it. Take it slow and use resources like Mathway or Algebrator to help.

Quote:When I was in high school I am convinced my algebra teacher gave me a D just so I would not have to repeat his class.
Well that just proves what I've always believed: math teachers are nothing more than the evil soulless minions of Satan. :reddevil:

Of course I could be wrong being a tad biased on the matter... Wink

Thanks IrishJohn. I appreciate your feedback.

I have been considering the ALEKS or the StraighterLine options. I am leaning toward ALEKS because StraighterLine jumps straight into College Algebra and it would seem to me that Beginning Algebra is the way to go.

I see that you are taking Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union next. I read the textbook The Soviet Colossus by Michael Kort and it proved to be all I needed. I highly recommend it and was able to find it at my local library.

I am awful at math and Aleks is time consuming but it can be done and I will get there, I am in Beginners Algebra. I am only at 22% assessment so I have a ways to go, I like it this way because you can get there eventually, just takes time. If I were to take a math exam I would fail no question about it.

And you will get there. Short of me owning or working there you won't find a bigger fan of Aleks than me. I do have a Math background but I found it to be the most complete learning software out there. I have nothing but praise for the company...I suggested when I canceled my account that they should consider working with ACE to get more of their courses approved and I was contacted by a real person saying that they are always looking to advance and this was being considered. Aleks is already a hidden treasure but if that happened then I can only imagine how much more popular it will be. Good luck! cheersmate

Once the ALEKS courses are transcribed through to ACE and then to Excelsior, does Excelsior actually give them an "A" or "B" or "C" and so on or do they have no actual effect on your GPA.

ALEKS doesn't give out grades. Once you hit the 70% mark, you then contact ALEKS so they can send the course to ACE who will then put it on your transcript. No grade is given.

Hope this answers your question.

Excelsior posts the Aleks transcribed through ACE as P (for pass) and it has no effect on your GPA.
