Aleks & Tesc

Hello everyone,
I have looked through all the Aleks threads and I can't seem to confirm if anyone has received credit for Aleks beginning algebra with TESC. I have tried to call an adviser but I can’t seem to get anywhere without being enrolled. If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Someone stated in the ALEKS thread that TESC only accepts Intermediate Algebra on up...I think they look at Beginning Algebra as "remedial"

I suspect this to be the case, but it hasn't been tried as far as I know. I'd be willing to bet, that our little group here represents the sum total of all TESC students who have found ALEKS, submitted to ACE, and tried for credit. The odds of an "outsider" stumbling on that path are slim.

My son will have this course on his transcript - but I won't know how it comes in for a few years. I'm suspecting it to be a 085 or similar. That would be "college credit" but not count toward the degree. Yeah- that sounds stupid, but the only real benefit that gives you is it acts as a placeholder /prereq. Oh, and you learn beginning algebra

To anyone who tries this- please post your results!! And those of you who are taking college algebra, if you have any hours left on your membership- you could simply squeeze out a quick assessment for beginning algebra- you'd pass on the first try, and then you could include that with your eval. Pretty please? It wouldn't really be any extra work- and it wouldn't cost any money. It's for the future of all IC members in the forum! Come on!

I directed my wife to ALEKS and she is starting out at Beginning Algebra. We plan on going through TESC. She is not math whiz AT ALL but she is finding ALEKS quite addictive. Unfortunately she won't be getting the credits evaluated until we have more CLEP, but I will definitely post once we do.

I emailed an advisor yesterday at TESC and asked about ALEKS. She said Beginning Algebra is MAT 102 and WILL satisfy the math requirement. That's what she said, take it for what it's worth but confirm it for yourself.

I just finished my BA at TESC and am still enrolled. Can you tell me the name of the advisor that told you that Beginning Algebra satifies the college math requirement? I am trying to help my husband who needs a math course to satisfy a college-level math requirement for TESC. He is not enrolled yet, but will be soon.

The thing is, he only needs one college level math course for the AA degree he is seeking. He took Math 117 at Community College of Philadelphia a long time ago. I thought that would fulfill his requirements; however when the transcript was sent to us, it showed that it was a "for credit" course when he took it, but is now a "not for credit" course. When I called TESC, they said it would not count. Thus, the reason why he is looking into ALEKs.

He has not had math for a long time and, if he could satisfy the requirement with something not too difficult, it would be preferred.

If you could let me know who you spoke with, that would be great. I have submitted tickets to Todd Siben at TESC, but have not gotten any clarity. I am guessing the reason I haven't is because the information is not for me ... and my husband is not an enrolled student yet.

Any information you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks!

Todd is a best bet, can I ask more info about the math though? Are you saying you have an old transcrip showing the math issued credit? If so, you can fight this. (unless it was for CEU credits)
Math credits don't expire (unless you might be a math major) so that's not the issue- it's over 100 level, so that's not the issue. I'm dying to know what would be the possible reason for the CC revoking credit.

Hi all, just want to jump in with a question....
Will Excelsior accept Beginning Algebra for their math requirement? I read in another thread that Excelsior will accept it as an elective, but then I read somewhere else that it would count for the math requirement. Thanks for any info!

After looking into this ad nauseum, both EC and TESC consider ALEKS Beginning Algebra (Aleks0001) as equivalent to MAT 102 (Genl Math) and it will meet the math requirement for the Liberal Studies degree. Other degree paths, I can't be sure, but I have it in writing from both schools that it will satisfy math for the Lib Stud. track.
