Last Class... Financial Accounting! HELP!
#1
So I am military, just came off a six month deployment and I am one class away from my BS thru ERAU in Pro Aero... but I need Finiancial Accounting. I took the DSST before my cruise and BOMBED it, but I was studying more for advancement than the DSST at the time so I didn't go in with high hopes. I bought the Cliffs notes Accounting Principles book at Borders the other day and have been studying that, but are there any more suggestions out there? I used the IC flashcards prior to the test before, but like I said didn't dedicate as much time as I should have. This is my last shot at the test, unless there is a CLEP ERAU will accept, otherwise I need to take thru the local CC and I don't have the time! PLEASE wise IC users.... HELP!!!

How about Straighterline? They have Accounting 1 and 2 I believe.

Straighterline is an option, and that's what I'm doing now. Personally I prefer CLEP and DSST, but if those are off the table then SL is a probably your next best bet. $99 for the month, $20-30 for the used book on Amazon or Half.com.

I'm really not considering TAKING the course as an option, I'm really looking for feedback from people who have taken the test and let me know the areas to concentrate on. I have the DSST study guide and downloaded the book that has the practice test in it, just seeing how hard it is. I mean I passed BLaw and Stats, I can get thru this one, right?

Hey there! I am not a number person, which is shown by the fact that this is the only test I failed. Tongue I failed the DSST version, but I was able to take the CLEP version. So that may be an option for you.

As far as studying... the biggest tip I can give you is follow the DANTES outline and then MEMORIZE IMPORTANT INFORMATION! Here's what I did. Find a way to remember large number of information. I used mostly mnemonics to help me remember the equations. Example: BALE is the balance sheet: assets = liabilities - expenses. Then practice writing out a everything you think you need to know. I had a page of equations and facts that I wrote out over and over and over. Then when you go in to take the test, get some scratch paper and write everything you can think of on there BEFORE you start the test! Then when you need an equation or a fact, instead of having to pull it out of your brain somewhere, it's all written down!

That was the biggest thing I did that helped me on the test. Honestly, I blocked out most of that experience from my mind... Wink

My recommendation for any exam:
  1. Use the study guide and focus on high value areas. Some areas are worth 25% of the grade while others are worth only 1-2%.
  2. Buy (or get from the library) a text book that matches the exam content. The right book makes it easy. The wrong book and you fail.
  3. Use REA guides.
  4. Consider using InstantCert. It won't teach the course but is a fantastic tool to help ace the exam.
  5. Consider using videos like Standard Deviants or The Teaching Company. While Standard Deviants videos may be a bit juvenile, they are a great resource.
  6. Take practice tests and make sure you pass with a safety margin.

Remember, it's better to delay a week or two if you are not quite ready.
