Since those courses were pass/fail, they don't contribute to your GPA - either good or bad. My advice is to take courses that you are interested in and think you'll do well in. "Replacing" a pass/fail course with a grade is not any different as just taking another course, in regards to your GPA.

If you're doing this to spruce up an application to a grad program, it will be up to the grad program how this is treated. In particular, they won't look at UMPI's computed GPA, they will compute their own. If the pass/fail courses are alt credit, then I think there's an excellent chance they would just count the replacement course, but if it's an RA course you're trying to replace, they could choose to ignore the second grade. It's also possible that they would be viewed as different courses if the course descriptions diverge at all. The only way to know is to query admissions for the specific program.
If I were trying to spruce up a grad resume, I'd either take different courses, or I'd try to gain relevent work experience to put on the application.
