BSBA TESC Roadmap, Advice appreciated

OK, so I've been bumbling around with CLEPing and stuff, I've taken a few classes, but I'm finally going to get serious about it. I've been jumping around this forum and gotten alot of helpful advice, so I went and revamped my roadmap for completion. I haven't decided the order of the exams yet, right now I just want to make sure that I'm taking the right courses. I tried matching up all the tests I could for a BSBA from Thomas Edison, and I had a few questions. Any help or suggestions y'all could provide would be amazing.

First of all, for the "Area of Study" I chose Operations Management, the only two required classes they give for that area are Intro to Ops Management and Quality Assurance, do the rest of the tests you take have to be directly related to Ops management, or management in general? I couldn't find that much for JUST Ops management, so I chose Principles of Supervision, Organizational Behavior, HR Management, & Money & Banking - all business courses, but not necessarily Ops management, will those classes work, or do I need others? Any suggestions?

Secondly, there were 3 classes I couldn't find a CLEP, DANTES, or TECEP for, those are; Principles of Managerial Accounting, Business Finance, & Quality Assurance. Any suggestions on those? Are there examinations that I just missed when I was looking through them?

Lastly, if someone wouldn't mind looking over my general plan and give me any sugestions on it that'd be awesome. Here's a Link To It

Hello.

Here is my two cents. First I just want to say that your plan was very nicely setup. It looks better than the one I did!!! I'm jealous!!!!

Here's what I see so far.

(1) I noticed that you took the English Comp CLEP. Was that the English Comp with essay or without? If you took the one without…you will have to confirm with TESC if they will accept that. From what I’ve heard from others on this forum is that TESC only accepts the English Composition with essay CLEP.

(2) Check with TESC to confirm if they will accept the Marketing Communications TECEP to fulfill the Managerial/Business Communications requirement.

(3) I would take the Social Sciences & History exam for 6 credits. Since you’ve already taken US History I and are studying for US History II, this exam should be a gimme. It won’t duplicate credit for the History I you already took and you’ll have an additional 3 credits left over that can apply towards your GenEd Electives or Free Electives.

(4) CLEP doesn’t have a Principles of Statistics exam, that’s a DANTES exam.

(5) Take the Introductory Business Law CLEP—not the TECEP to save money.

(6) You will need a Managerial Accounting class. Check with your local community college first. TESC is $165 per credit hour.

(7) The Financial Accounting CLEP is 3 credits not 6 credits.

(8) I believe the Principles of Finance DANTES exam should take care of the “Business Finance” requirement. Check to confirm.

(9) You will need a class for Quality Assurance. Follow steps in #6.

(10) For your Free Electives category, you should only need 3 more credits to fulfill the 9 because you have 6 extra credits from your Humanities & Natural Sciences/Math categories. Also look into FEMA credits. They are free to take and TESC accepts them for free!

(11) For your Operations Management Area of Study; outside of the Intro to Operations Management TECEP and the Quality Assurance class, I’m not sure how the rest of these exams will stack up. My guess would be that you’re gonna need classes for the rest of these. I don’t know where the exams you have listed will fit into this area of study. That’s why I made the assumption I made. I would check with TESC to confirm.

That’s my two cents. Wish I could be of more help to you. But if there is anything else you need, I’ll be glad to help you some more. Try to find someone else on here who might be majoring in what you’re majoring in.

Great Feedback Marshall, very detailed, I appreciate your time. I'll contact Thomas Edison tonight and try to post the info they give me. A couple of the tests I'm taking TECEPs in place of CLEP or DANTES because through my job I have a tuition reimbursement program, that DOESN'T cover CLEP, but will cover all of the TESC expenses (assuming I make halfway decent grades). `

Do you know if the U.S. History II test will overlap the credits for U.S. History I? Should I take Social Sciences and History in addition to that as an elective? I'm ready for the History II test, which I'll be taking later this week (hopefully Wednesday - my day off from work), and I don't want to see that preparation go to waste...

The English Comp test I took was WITH the Essay.

You're right about the Financial Accounting. I was going off of the Thomas Edison Catalog where they haven't updated that it's only a 3 credit transfer now.

As far as your US History II CLEP goes--it will not duplicate credit for US History I, so you are good to go. You will receive credit for both exams. They have two different course descriptions/numbers. The ones you need to worry about duplicating would be exams that have the same course descriptions/numbers, i.e, Psychology 101 at a local community college and the Introductory Psychology CLEP exam.

Yes you can take the Social Sciences & History CLEP exam and that is a 6 credit exam. I took this as my very first CLEP and scored a 60. It has a different course description/number and also will not duplicate the 2 US History exams. If you take this exam after the US History II exam then the 6 credits will either apply towards your GenEd electives or your Free Electives categories.

As I stated before, if you want to save some money and need some Free Elective credits, look into FEMA. They offer courses for free in their Emergency Management Program and TESC will apply these courses to your Free Electives category. FYI---They (TESC) will accept up to 25 FEMA credits for transfer. They are mostly one credit courses each, with some courses that offer 2 credits each. Here is the website if you want to check it out:

Let me know before you start these courses so I can tell you which ones to do for credit. Some courses TESC won't give you credit for. I can give you a list of up to 25 of the courses that I took that TESC granted me credit for.

Looking at the electives suggested here:

Thomas Edison State College | BSBA in Operations Management Credit Distribution

I'd say you'd be hard pressed to get those tests accepted as electives for the Ops Mgmt major. General Business, maybe. I'd look for on-line classes either at a community college or 4-year university that matched up more with what they suggested. The odds of getting them approved would be greater.

Gurus:

I need small help from you regarding my degree plan. Please let me know which is easy & then cost effective.

I am international student so not much familiar with American Education system. Then I stubble to this forum and I see so many avenues are open for me.

I enrolled TESC BS program with Major in Accounting.

Here is the detail for my program plan

90 credit Transferred my TESC from my transcript evaluation
12 credit -Finished at TESC
----
102 Total credit


Now to complete my BS requirement I need another 18 Cr
These are the course I need to take as per Degree Audit

1 ENG Comp 102
2 Intro to Marketing
3 Business Policy
4 Business in Society
5 Intro to Sociology
6 College level math
7 Principle of Fin

Now what are the options available for me for these courses? Guided study-Online-TECEP course frem TESC or I have some cheaper options to finish this course eg CLEP ( I have now clue what CLEP and how it works). And at end of the day pay enrollment fees to TESC to get my degree from them.

I really want finish this asap, how much typical study time you need to finish these course. With 3W (work+wife+weird kid ) its hard to study but have to finish this just need some discipline and good plan.

I will really appreciate your help.

Based on what I see, I would do the following:

-English Composition with essay CLEP
-Principles of Marketing CLEP
-Business Policy TECEP*
-Business in Society TECEP**
-Introductory Sociology CLEP
-College Mathematics (General) CLEP***
-DSST Principles of Finance (DANTES)
________________________________________________________________
*For the Business Policy & Business in Society requirements, I would check with other schools to see if you can finish this cheaper. TESC is $132 per credit hour for NJ residents and $175 for out of state residents. The TECEP exam is $80 per credit attempted for enrolled TESC students and $160 per credit attempted for nonenrolled students. Both exams are 3 credits a piece so do the math.

I would check with a local community college to see if it offers the aforementioned courses first. Then I would check with Penn Foster College.

**For the College Math, make sure that this is all you need to complete your degree requirements. I would think since you're majoring in Accounting that TESC would require you to have at least Pre-calculus and Statistics. Just check to make sure.

So let me understand clearly.

At present I am not enrolled for this year at TESC ( I am NJ resident & not far from Trenton)

1) So first I finish all other class from CLEP/DNATES
2) Check for 2 other class if I can take it from somewhere else
3) Then I pay $1000+ to TESC for enrollment
4) Take 2 Business policy/society class from them (assuming can't take from somewhere esl)
5) Then pay graduation fees to get my Degree certificate?

Am I missing any link here?

I have degree audit was done by TESC at home I will check that tonight and will post more info here.

Hey Tia!

Yeah it looks good.

I would finish all your CLEP and Dantes exams first.

Second, check to see if you can take the Business Policy and Business In Society at another school because it's cheaper. Check with Penn Foster College as well as a local community college.

If by chance you're getting financial aid and your aid will cover everything, then I would just take the 2 courses at TESC/online. I'm just a frugal person so I'm always trying to save money whenever I can. If money is not an issue for you then do what you want!

Once you're done with all your classes and CLEPS/DANTES, then I would enroll.

Once you enroll and TESC processes everything, I believe all you would need to do is apply for graduation, pay the fee and you're done!!!

***The bottom line is, just make sure you're done with everything within 12 months. If you enroll into TESC under the "enrolled plan," that's only good for 12 months. If you go over 12 months and you're still not done with your degree, you'll have to pay a renewal fee of $1,180.***
