Can only test out of 5 classes w/ CLEP?

Yeah, I know. I was already enrolled in community college (after an 8 years absence from school) and found out about CLEP by seeing a poster on the wall.

PeteDude Wrote:That brings up an interesting thought. I'd like to see a list of non-Big 3 schools with generous transfer allowances (e.g. 80 or more units allowed).

Maybe I can put together one someday. . . when there's time. . .

UMUC allows 60 CLEP/DSST/ECE credits toward a Bachelors (and an additional 30 from transfer credits). And yes, I'm milking it for all its worth!! keehee! hilarious

The issue that even I have with UMUC is cost... Out-of-state tuition is  but it helps a lot that I get reimbursement from my employer.

Hey, glad to hear that there is another UMUC degree seeker here. I am taking my first DSST on Monday and hope it is the first of many. 9 to be exact. I have 14 courses left to take to get my Business degree from UMUC. I started in '76 and have gotten credits from UMCP, UMUC, MC and hopefully through these exams. I finally can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I am taking Information Systems on Monday. Want to get that first one out of the way!!!

Good luck on your test tomorrow, cate

Your community college obviously is a testing center (where credits can be sent anywhere) but that particular community college only takes so many hours (15 or 18). In fact, most community colleges have a very restricted clep-acceptance agenda because many of its degrees are associates! It's not just discrimination for CLEPs but on APs as well. It's just harder at a community college in respects to testing out.

Most of the large, public universities will take between 30 and 60 hours. It's usually around 45 or so, give or take, depending on what degree you are going for, minimum scores, and correspondence classes in addition to CLEPs can affect the number taken...usually private universities will not accept CLEPs without some sort of substantial program or scores.

I go to a university that has a VERY generous CLEP policy. I mean the maximum - between 55 and 60 credits, for a bachelors, taken by CLEP & correspondence. (Sometimes that number is combined, other times separated for either minimization or maximazation by the school)

Good luck on your classes. Remember, ANY progress is better than no progress! So even if you can only afford/can CLEP out a few, it's wayy better than sitting there an extra full semester of classes on stuff you know you can do well on! Smile

(p.s. most of the people on this board belong to online/correspondence universities such as Thomas Edision, EC, etc - i do not belong to one of these but I do deal with more than 4 "physical" universities for my degree, if you need help with advisors, councelors, rules, loopholes, I'm here for you! We're all here to help you!)

No More CLEPs left. I've taken them all! :p

HawkGuy Wrote:It really depends on the school you go to. Most B&M schools (at least here in AZ) won't let you CLEP out of more than 15 credits.

I am just about 1/2 way through the University of Phoenix, and they will only allow a student to test out of 10 classes. (max)

Can you smell the greed?

Because their classes are soooooo expensive, I will have no choice but to test out of all ten classes possible.

I have never seen more than 45 outside of the big three- and I can't tell you how many colleges I have checked. Maybe 300 or more. AND, those 45 are not necessarily in anything you need LOL

I've seen a few with 80-90 credit transfer limits. I think the regular Alabasca program is one. Southwestern University (sic?) is another, IIRC.

The problem with even a high level of credit transfer for many of those schools is the sheer cost of taking the last few classes. But I'm sure there are many students who wouldn't necessarily be able to find the same programs in the Big 3.

Saint Leo -

Max of 39 transfer credits through testing, mix or match CLEP or DSST (Dantes) - and some ridiculous number of community college credits permitted for transfer. (for a BA or BS)

I have four more Dantes to go to max out and will transfer 21 credits from a community college.

Most of the Dantes I'll be taking count for upper division, two crim and one ssc.

I was hoping I wasn't the only one :o Good luck on your exam Monday!!! Infosys was my first CLEP after a two year hiatus. I thought it was somewhere in between easy and dificil.

Also, forgot to mention, UMUC has a prior learning credits program too. Wondering why there isn't a "Big 4" ? Seems like UMUC is only popular among those of us in the DCMDVA general area.

Shoto, could you lead me to the area on the EC website that tells you which classes I need (gen ed), and what I may start testing out of? I'm going for the CJ as well. i'd like to begin testing while I wait for my eval to come back. Just not sure what to take. Thanks.

Transfer yes- in fact many colleges have only a 30ish residency requirement. I meant that I hadn't found any colleges that accepted that much test credit outside of the big 3.
