Project Management at UMPI
#1
Hi everyone. Just wanted to give an update on how things are going at UMPI and ask about the project management concentration.

Update:

So far things have gone exceptionally well at UMPI with 6 competencies out of 10 I needed for my BABA in Management and Leadership + MIS minor completed in the first session! It is not easy by any means, but the readings for the competencies relate to the content very closely, which has allowed me to complete them quickly and confidently. My previous experience in the subject area is limited to what I have learned taking SDC and Sophia courses.

Interaction with professors is a definite highlight. Every question I asked was answered promptly and in detail and boosted my confidence. When I got stuck on the programming assessment, the professor worked with me to complete the program over the course of a few Zoom meetings. That was awesome because I thought I was going to be stuck working on that assessment for weeks. So, definitely reach out if you need help. I have not had access to this level of support while enrolled in other colleges, so it is very refreshing.

Project Management Questions:

I am thinking about adding the project management concentration (or maybe marketing) as I only have 4 courses left (2 required and 2 elective) and will have extra time left over in the next session. I only have 4 courses left for a full Project Management concentration to be added; however, I transferred in Sophia’s Project Management to cover UMPI’s BUS 141: Introduction to Project Management and I think I remember ss20ts mentioning that you should take that one with UMPI because the project is connected to other competencies. Is that correct?

If you took Project Management as a concentration or minor, what was your experience like? Is there anything you wish you knew before starting the project management concentration?

Yes you should take Introduction to Project Management at UMPI if you want the PM minor or concentration because you'll need that project to be the template to complete your Final Assessment for BUS400 and BUS401 which are required for the minor and concentration. Heads up on BUS400 and BUS401. You can't complete both in the same term. BUS400 is offered in term 1 and BUS401 is offered in term 2.

The PM minor and concentration have lengthy projects for the Final Assessment for several classes.

As an alternative consider getting a CAPM if you don't want to extend your time at UMPI

I'd go for the CAPM either way.

Thank you both for what you contribute to the forum. I wouldn't have found UMPI if it were not for you!

Also, thanks for the reminder about needing another session. Hmm... Now I have to decide whether I should spend $1400 for another concentration or use that money to go after certificates. I wonder, do employers care more about a certificate or a degree concentration? Of course, I am sure it depends on the employer/certificate/industry.

If you want to work in pm at all, the PMP is the ultimate goal. The CAPM will open doors that a degree concentration won't open.

That's what I was thinking as well. I might try out the CAPM if I end up going for PM jobs. I am tempted to try out some of UMPI's new marketing courses as well.

I just heard back from my advisor and it turns out that the following project management courses will be both session one and session two for the Fall:

1. Bus 343 Project Risk & Cost Management
2. Bus 400 Project Management Applications
3. Bus 401 Project Management Applications II

So, it seems like the session a course is available in changes over time.

Also, I found out that BUS 359: IT Project Management it is not currently required or offered on YourPace, despite being listed on the website.

That's definitely a change! When I completed the PM minor, the classes were rotated and not offered each term so this is a great move.

I couldn't take BUS359. You need to have a job in IT currently to take that course in YourPace. If you don't have a job in IT then you can't take the course. I wouldn't worry about it. It didn't seem like many people were able to take it.

Which MIS courses have you taken? I’m majoring in BABA management and leadership also and I’m thinking of adding MIS. But I’m a little apprehensive about how tough the projects would be. Was there a lot of coding involved and need to be memorized?
