Harvard Poetry In America Series Tuition Increase to $1000
#1
The fall catalog has been added to Harvard Extension School's database. The Poetry In America series are now $1000 each.

I figured this was going to happen. This is certainly not anywhere near as good a deal as before, but $250 per credit hour for in subject - English - graduate credit is still pretty good. I think that the sweet spot is for teachers at schools who can get maybe half reimbursement or some grant funding.

I did review the catalog to see if there are any interesting options. One thing I noticed is that the graduate certificate in American Literature and Culture requires 16 graduate credits that can be completed by taking three four credit classes and two two credit classes. The poetry classes would cost $1000 and fulfill the humanities side of the certificate and then a person would need to hunt down two full-priced two credit social science courses. I didn't find any with just a cursory look, but the certificate can be completed through a three year period. If the credits came in at a per credit cost of $750 to a thousand per credit, that would end up being about $7000 total with the new pricing for a Harvard grad. certificate and membership in the Harvard Extension alumni association. Is that a good deal?

HIST E-1604
The Plymouth Colony

This one is a 2 credit social science "active weekend" course for $1400 or so during the first weekend in April 2020.

HIST E-1607B
Boston in the American Revolution

This one is in February of 2020. Again, it is 2 credits and costs $1400.

So, that's it. For those on this board who have completed three of the poetry classes, it would cost $2800 additional to take these two social science courses, earn the American Lit. and Culture grad certificate and become Harvard Extension alumni members.

At the original $250 price, that would be $3500 out the door if you slept on a park bench in Cambridge.

I've been eyeballing doing exactly what you described with the two-credit courses..... And I am not above sleeping on a bench.... But who's going to cover my lunch? For now, I'm still bent on completing either a Harvard English degree or a Journalism degree. Leaning toward journalism but may stick with English. We'll see.

(On a related note, because work is taking me to Haverhill, MA on the 25th, I'm leaving a day early to visit Harvard campus on the 23rd for Summer School check-in. I'm going to get a student ID and spend the day visiting all the museums, exploring the campus.... and since I hail from Faulkner's Oxford, Mississippi... finding the plaque on the bridge that commemorates the fictional suicide of the fictitious Quentin Compson.
If anyone is interested, I can share photos or information of the excursion on this or a separate thread. While I'm there for work, I plan on networking the hell out of the event and finding a new friend with a guest room in the area.)

You just need a sign that says "Will do English for food."

Oh wow, I lived in Olive Branch, just a little north of you. My high school's library had murals of Faulkner and other MS writers painted all over it. Small world.

Keep an eye out when new ones are added. I was told by HE staff that some are $200/250 during some semesters, and some are full-price like other Harvard courses during other times.

Do you think they'll add brand new ones or just keep repeating the same five?

It take a lot of effort to develop new courses. I would assume these would same five would be offered for quite a long time.

Sorry if this has already been covered, but can these courses be used to earn the American Literature and Culture graduate certificate? The certificate is not really important since the loose credits will bump my friend up to a GS-7, but having the certificate would be nice.
