Minimum CLEP Scores for TESU credit?
#1
https://www.tesu.edu/academics/catalog/c...am-program

this page says "The minimum score required to earn credit is equivalent to a letter grade of C," whatever that means.

But this page:

https://clep.collegeboard.org/college-cr...university

says minimum score of 50 for just about everything.

Does anyone have any idea which one is right?

For all CLEP exams, you need a 50 to pass, and that's equivalent to a C (although they're not graded). For the foreign language exams, you can actually get additional credits if you score above a 2nd threshold (so you get 6cr for a score of 50, and then 9 credits for scoring above an additional threshold, which is different for each one).

oh ok. seems like it'd just be easier to say 50 then though? I mean I think "70-79" when I hear "C"

either way, thanks for the info

Cleps are scored differently than most other tests. 80 is the top score you can get on any CLEP, so in that light, a 50 really would be close to a C overall.

Well the one i took today had 100 questions on it. Seems like 100 would be the top score?

I mean not arguing or anything but why make it so complicated. You've got 100 questions, we all know what a C is, seems pretty straightforward.

Anyway thanks for the info, I didn't know 80 was the top score. Once you know that I guess it all makes more sense.

It goes on a 20-80 scale, as I understand, which is fairly normal for a curved rating (usually an average of 50 with a standard deviation of 10)

CLEP scoring is a bit more confusing than it needs to be.
When you hear "C" you think 70ish %, but unlike most tests, you NEVER find out what your test % score is! They have a scaled algorithm for every exam they offer (kept confidential) that determines what you CLEP score actually is.

This is hypothetical, but as an example,
Exam A has 100 questions, you need 70 correct to get a 50 (passing)
Exam B has 100 questions, you need 60 correct to get a 50 (passing)
Exam C has 100 questions, you need 40 correct to get a 50 (passing)

In every case, their process determined that someone getting a scaled score of 50 was equal to that of a "C" student. As you can see, the number needed will vary, so for some exams, you have to do a lot better than others. It's *kinda* like being graded on a curve, but that's my working, not theirs.
