help please? want to finally graduate
#1
Hi, I'm new to the forum and I'm very grateful to my friend for letting me know that there is a way to finally earn my degree without spending 2 years and tens of thousands of dollars.

I went to college about 20 years ago and never quite finished.  I have been a Certified Personal Trainer, then a Stay-At-Home Mom, then a Homeschool Administrator. Smile

I have always wanted to get my degree, but I didn't feel like I could justify the cost (with the traditional method) since I don't work for pay.  So, this opportunity really excites me.

I don't care what my major is: I would like to major in whatever gets me my bachelor degree the fastest.  In college I studied Spanish and Religion (went to a religious institution) and I am no longer passionate about either subject.  I love social work/sociology, business, and science.  I would like to look into studying something in one of those fields as an MA once I'm done achieving this first goal.

I would really appreciate it if anyone could share advice about where to start:

1. Which college is most likely to accept the highest percentage of my credits (especially including religion and Spanish)?
2. Which degree would you recommend to most quickly graduate with what I have?
3. How do I figure out which tests I need to take to try to save money and get credits outside of the traditional schooling method?

Thank you very, very much!

Hi, you should apply to the Big 3, and get an official evaluation with them to see where you stand. I am biased and point to TESU for a BSBA or BS Tech studies, WGU for IT programs, COSC for BALS, and Excelsior for ABET programs. From skimming through your courses, you may have the bulk of your BALS at the Big 3 completed. You may have just a few (5-10) courses left for a BALS.

TESU is an easy one.  All you need is 20cr, and you can get most of them for free.

1) Apply to TESU, send in your transcripts ($75 plus fees for transcripts)

2) Take these free courses now:

Sophia:
Developing Effective Teams
The Essentials of Managing Conflict

The Institutes:
Insurance Ethics

3) Then take the Modern States courses and get free vouchers for these CLEP Exams:
College Math
A&I Lit
American Government

4) Take either of these from Study.com ($199 for 1 month, and 2 courses/exams):
COM 120: Presentation Skills in the Work Place OR COM 101: Public Speaking
Plus replace any of the CLEP exams with a Study.com course

5) Register for the Cornerstone and take it ASAP ($300)

6) Register for the Capstone as soon as you can afford it ($1098)

7) Apply for graduation ($332 plus $2,200 Residency Waiver)

TOTAL cost to get your BALS from TESU: $4,204

You could probably graduate by June.

@dfrecore is, as usual, on the mark, I would just add that the Study.com affiliate program with TESU is the key to the discounted pricing she quoted in her post, so be sure to take at least one (might as well be two since you get two for the one month subscription price) at Study.com.

It looks like TESU would be a good fit.  However, the BYU Bachelor of General Studies would be worth mentioning to you.  It is only for prior students who earned at least 30 credits and it is through their Independent Study program.  You can find the information here: https://bgs.byu.edu/
23 year old son: BOG AAS from Pierpont CTC Dec 2019
Myself: BS Business/French-1991, Masters of Rehabilitation Counseling-1995, Completed the Poetry in America Series from HES for 20 credits in English in May 2019.

Thank you, I just applied to TESU right now, and I have also applied to COSC in the past couple of days.

Unfortunately, I don't believe I am allowed to go to BYU anymore as an ex-Mormon.  They allow "non-members" of their church, and members, but not previous members who have resigned.  I emailed their program just to be sure, but I don't think I will qualify.

Thank you!

Thank you so much for the advice, everyone.  I noticed that TESU also has a Spanish major, so I hope I can find out how much it would take to finish my degree in Spanish.  It seems like it could possibly be quicker, but maybe not and maybe it would be more expensive if the classes I lack are not cheap/free/available with the great resources you've all shared with me.

You're missing step #8 which is to send Dfrecore flowers. Wink

The do have a foreign language degree; it won't be faster than a BALS, but it's certainly worth a shot.  When you apply to TESU, apply for the Spanish degree, and see what you get.  Once you see the major portion of the degree, you'll know whether it's worth it or not (I don't know that degree as well, but they have very specific requirements that if you haven't yet met, will be difficult to do inexpensively).

If it turns out that you can't meet one or more requirements, just switch to the BALS.
