I ran across the PLA tips thread while searching for something else. After reading up on PLAs, I found that I didn't realize that you could use those for MOOC courses. After finding out a few interesting Master degrees that only require certain classes (Calculus I-III, Linear Algebra, etc) and not math GPA or a specific degree, I figured I could be a bit more creative with my BA. I'm planning on taking those courses at a New Mexico CC for about $50/credit (yay!), then getting 12 UL through PLA and I think the remaining 6 from ACE credits.
Anyway, back to the question. Does anyone have experience with PLAs after MMOOCs? I think in the Tips thread, there's a Software Engineer, but he also has career experience to pull from. I'm wondering if I could flesh out my outline based on the Learning outcomes while I'm taking it, then build it out when I'm done and the material is fresh in my mind. Researching was one of my favorite parts of projects back in school. Pulling it together - not so much. But, I'm confident in my ability to get it done.
I have a PLA-100 free offer from TESU in my inbox. So, I figured, why not!

Quote:Note: Credit cannot be earned through portfolio assessment for certain types of courses, including physical education activity courses and any course that must be fulfilled through direct current experience, such as practicum courses, field experiences and internships including student teaching, cooperative education, senior seminars, capstones and lab courses not accompanied by related lecture/theory courses. Also note that English composition and most math courses are not well suited for portfolio assessment; however, Thomas Edison State University offers TECEPÂ exams for students who have prior learning in most of those courses, and the University accepts CLEP, DSST and Excelsior exam credits where appropriate.

I saw that. But in thier PLA database are:
History of Mathematics MAT-301 - 3 sh
Probability STA-321 -3sh
Mathematical Modeling (MAT-351) 3.00 s.h.
Mathematical Logic (MAT-401) 3.00 s.h.
So I figured it would be worth a shot. I may be wrong though. I tend to get excited, haha.

I think it would be a challenge to PLA based off of a MOOC. Look at the learning objectives for the courses you'd like to PLA and compare them to the syllabus for the MOOC. You would have to document how you had achieved those objectives by taking the MOOC. It would help if there were projects or test grades that you could submit.
NanoDegree: Intro to Self-Driving Cars (2019)
Coursera: Stanford Machine Learning (2019)
TESU: BA in Comp Sci (2016)
TECEP:Env Ethics (2015); TESU PLA:Software Eng, Computer Arch, C++, Advanced C++, Data Struct (2015); TESU Courses:Capstone, Database Mngmnt Sys, Op Sys, Artificial Intel, Discrete Math, Intro to Portfolio Dev, Intro PLA (2014-16); DSST:Anthro, Pers Fin, Astronomy (2014); CLEP:Intro to Soc (2014); Saylor.org:Intro to Computers (2014); CC: 69 units (1980-88)

A lot of MOOCs have graded tests, but students have to pay for verified certificates to prove that they were the ones who took those tests. For something like programming, I can imagine there being a project where one will develop code that can be included in a portfolio.

ACE is not going to work for math UL because Boston University has not announced future dates for their edX differential equations courses.

Coursera and edX have proven to not be good platforms for ACE-approved courses. They need to have their self-paced and/or regularly offered courses evaluated.

But do you have to take (and pay for) PLA-200?

That's exactly why I was wondering about PLAs.
Ideas Wrote:I am curious what kind of programs need Calc III.
MS: Applied and Computational Mathematics at Bowie needs at a math or similar degree and:
1. Calculus sequence 2. Differential Equations 3. Linear Algebra 4. Mathematical Probability and Statistics 5. Programming language C or C++.
Since 'promising' candidates without all of the requirements can be admitted I emailed the coordinator to ask about that. I was wondering if I could enter without Differential Equations, if I had programming experience and all of the Calculus. I figured I could take the edX course so I have the actual knowledge, then take an actual class with a little bit of financial aid money I'll be getting. I've read about students doing this and they were required to take the needed courses during their first year. Anyway, he said:
Quote:Our graduate program in Applied and Computational Mathematics is very demanding, so all of the prerequisites should be satisfied. You need a sequence of Calculus courses (yes, Calc. I, II, and III). In addition, you need Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics, and have a working knowledge in C/C++ computer programming language, as well. ACM is a difficult program and we need to make sure that the entering students are properly prepared. Provisional acceptance can be granted essentially in case of the C/C++ programming language.
All this time, I thought Calc III was Diff Equations. Oh well. Obviously, I had to cross that one off my list

Mooc math courses are a really bad idea if it is not a terminal course. I'm sorry but the edx courses I took are a joke designed to pass as many folks as possible, not to train math majors.
I'd forget about the PLA idea and plan on taking every course as intended in the traditional manner since you are going to grad school in math other than calc 2 and below.
