Can you help me plan my degree path?
#61
OP, does your major have to be Public Safety Administration? Could you do Individualized Studies in Criminal Justice/ Psychology/Sociology instead?
You would take the things you currently have listed along with the following:

Area of Concentration: Individualized Studies in Criminal Justice/ Sociology/ Psychology
36 credits, 21 upper level

Upper Level
1. UExcel Cultural Diversity 3
2. UExcel Juvenile Delinquency 3
3. UExcel Social Psychology 3
4. UExcel Abnormal Psychology 3
5. DSST Substance Abuse 3
6. COSC Capstone 3

Lower Level
7. CRJT1030 Basic Firearms Education 3
8. CRJT1130 Defensive and Tactical Driving 3
9. CRJT1310 Community Relations Concepts 3
10. CRJT1510 Criminal Law and Procedure 3
11. CRJT2930 Basic Law Enforcement & Procedures 3
12. CLEP etc. Intro to Sociology 3

In addition to the 18 upper level above, you could complete these upper levels to make a total of 30:
DSST Business Ethics
DSST Civil War and Reconstruction
DSST History of the Soviet Union
UExcel Psychology of Adulthood and Aging

The COSC Cornerstone fulfills the Information Literacy requirement.

DSST History of the Soviet Union fulfills the Global Understanding requirement.

CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Lit is often considered easier than Art of the Western World, but either will fulfill Literature and Fine Arts.

COSC might decide that Intermediate Algebra will not work for the quantitative, so be prepared to take CLEP College Math, ALEKS College Algebra, UExcel Contemporary Math, etc.

I counted up 34 credits in your potential lists that shouldn’t duplicate, so those would become your electives. If COSC accepts Beginning and Intermediate Algebra, you should be fine for 60 arts and science credits for a BS degree. If not, the CLEP Social Science would give you those extra 6 credits in one go.
BA, MA, EdS, MMT, etc.

Wow!
Thanks for all the positive posts!!

No, I'm not married to that degree or that college. I still prioritize the fastest / cheapest route to a Bachelors. But, I've been pretty vocal about the worthlessness of CJ degrees, and I feel it to be hypocritical to wind up with one. Also, administering police and security *sounds* like what I want to be marketable in. I realize it isn't on the face of the degree, but it will be in the resume.

I understand excelsior is off the big three list now. Is there a way to get an 'independent study' (is that the right term) degree that will put me in the ballpark of a public safety administration degree at either of those two places?

I am very sad to learn that my math credits may be worthless. I'm struggling with classes as is, in topics I know. I am exceptionally math adverse. I cannot imagine how bad taking college algebra, even through aleks will be. Sad Sad Sad

Thanks for the roadmap suggestions, too! I'll have to go research uexcel some. I don't remember much about them from previous inquiries.

Happy Independence Day!

Ok,
so.... COSC is out as far as what I wanted to do.

Talked to Shawn Holliday. I *think* I may have it worked out to stay at a friends' house and take several DSST's back to back over the course of a weekend.

Wanted to see how they might fit in the COSC Bachelors in Public Safety Administration. I want to basically transfer everything in. I knew I'd have to take the capstone, but I (and, I'm sure I've deen warned but just didn't hear it) didn't realize that you truly cannot transfer all of the credits for this degree.

You can only transfer 90 TOTAL. You have to take the remainder at COSC.

Quote:Hi High Order. The maximum number of credits someone can transfer to us if they are doing the Public Safety Administration program is 90. This is a bit different than the general college academic residency of six credits (meaning that, in most cases, students can transfer up to 114 credits). Some programs (PSA, HIM, Cyber Security) do have a higher residency requirement.

That said, there’s still a lot of flexibility. There are not any DSST or CLEP exams that can be used directly in the PSA concentration, but there’s no limit to using applicable exams throughout the remainder of the degree.

You cannot portfolio out of the remaining courses either.

I asked for a list of the degrees that allow the 114 maximum (which, I thought capstone was 3 credits, that maths out to 6), but was given a link to the page that lists all the degrees.

I'm dragging now. Bio lab and intro to comms isn't really hard, I just am getting homework block. Think I am going to slug through those two, follow through on the DSST thing if it works out, then catch up on some noncollege coursework for the remainder of the year.

Ok.

I realize I'm wearing out my welcome here. For that, I apologize.

I look at this and see a forest of words.

I *think* I have some ideas, but I would like for someone who's not invested to take a glance at this.

I paid TESU for a credit review.

It came back. They flat denied me over twenty credits, and put some stuff in some slots I don't understand the reasoning behind.

I didn't realize this wasn't going to be my last non-college free weekend, so I have to run for right now, but I wanted to post their results to give anyone who may be interested in offering some advice a while to mull it over.

As always, I am looking for the easiest (for me), cheapest then fastest route to completing this project.

Thanks VERY much for all the replies I have gotten; I would never have even begun this journey had it not been for this site.

respectfully

Right now, go sign up for ALEKS math and take AT LEAST Intermediate Algebra and Stats, and College Algebra too if you can. Get those done before 11/30/2016.

ALEKS ACE approval is about to expire.

Your current degree is not a test-friendly one as far as I know.

Charter Oak may limit credits from a single specific source to 90 credits....but you can bring in everything except Corner and Capstone.....at least 114 credits.

1) I would consider doing a what-if for BA Liberal Studies.
2) I would strongly encourage you to do all four ALEKS courses NOW!!!! Nothing is as important as ALEKS for those with difficulties in math. Ideally, you should do intermediate algebra, college algebra, precalc, and stats. I noticed your intermediate algebra course did not count. We'd need to see the course description for that class, but it may have been too basic to count.

I'm only looking at the AOS:

There are 12 requirements in section 2:

Two of the slots explicitly requires a specific UL course. AOJ-484 SOS-492
Four of the slots explicitly requires a specific LL course AOJ-101,SOC-291,ENG-201,STA-201
Three of the slots has to be forced empty because you are short UL courses. You need 15UL in the AOS + capstone. You cannot plug in LL courses even if they would fit.

They gave you credit for three of the requirements, which is all the room you have.
Any other LL course for the AOS other than those stated explicitly above has to be thrown out because there is no room.

Sorry, but the eval in the AOS does make sense and is correct.

The math courses were not used because TESU considers them developmental, looks like the college that the courses transferred from considered them developmental. Once course is considered a duplicate and the other unused courses are electives not gen ed and do not have any place to go. Ask TESU to move the insurance ethics course to fulfill the gen ed ethics requirement which would open up the diversity section. Intro to sociology is an easy one for diversity. For some of the CJ courses you can use either CSU global CBE (challenge exams) or Propero (similar to straighterline but not proctored). For the Gen ed section you have many options to choose from. There are self paced courses such as straighterline, study.com, schmoop, Saylor or exams such as DSST, CLEP, TECEP, Uexcell. The CJ AOS has very specific requirements as to what classes to take. I think most can be transferred in though there are fewer options and they are a little more expensive. Penn Foster may have a few CJ courses but check ACE first. According to a what if evaluation I did, criminal theory course can be satisfied by Victimology.

This looks correct to me. What happened with the "other courses" area is that the courses in the Free Electives section cannot be counted as Gen Ed, so they go into Free Electives. Then, you are only allowed 27cr there. So, anything else that won't fit into the Gen Ed's or CJ AOS would go into Free Electives, until you are at the 27cr max. Then they get bumped completely down to Other courses.
