Free or low cost Six Sigma White/Greenbelt Certification?
#11
jsd Wrote:I have no idea what Six Sigma is, but I guess I'll find out next week when I get white and yellow belt certified for no reason

Why would you need to get both when you can jump right to yellow?

There are no prerequisites to our Online Certification Programs. For instance, our Black Belt Program touches upon all of the topics covered in both the yellow and green belt curriculum.

However, we expect our students to have a general understanding of business, Internet access with a compatible web browser, and a valid email address.

Additionally, you may need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader and a Macromedia Flash plug-in (if not already installed) .

I found the following Six Sigma Green Belt certification for $99. I'm having difficulty working out which certifications are legitimate, if that makes sense. Are they only recognised if offered by certain organisations? Worried as this seems considerably cheaper than the others.

I would stay far away from that. If you scroll down the page, they're using the fact that they are PayPal verified and that their website is TRUSTe and McAfee certified as sources of legitimacy for their program. One has nothing at all to do with the other.

I see no mention of any accreditation. Reputable programs will be accredited by or have some sort of stamp of approval from an organization like IASSC, ASQ, or PMI.

If you search on Wikipedia, they tell you that Six Sigma has no real standard - it's basically TQM that was changed over the years, and there is not a single company to go to for it - you can go anywhere that offers it. So I'm wondering how much it actually means to an employer, if there's no real standard as to what is taught. I would do free version to learn the lingo and what it's about, but I think I would avoid spending a lot of money on the different belts.

As a comparison, a Cisco or Microsoft certification, for example, has come to mean something to employers over time. The training is consistent, and they know what they are getting when someone has a CCNP or MCSE. There is no such thing for a Six Sigma Green Belt.

This "belt system" looks like it might be interesting if for no other reason than to have it on a resume.

Yes, I have a six sigma green belt... so there is such a thing. A lot of healthcare organizations want you to be certified in LEAN or Six Sigma certified - and they prefer a black belt.

Also, someday maybe a MS in Forensic Psychology, just for fun.   Oh, and a BS in Animal Behavior.  And, maybe when I'm 85 a PhD in something fun.

I agree that it's a "thing" but I would not spend a lot of money on it unless it was a requirement, and possibly if your company had a specific place they wanted you to get it. Like I said, unlike IT industry certs, there is not one specific company that offers it, so quality may vary. A lot of companies that want this also send their people through it at their own cost, so everyone has the same training.

Here's what it says on Wikipedia: "Criteria for Green Belt and Black Belt certification vary; some companies simply require participation in a course and a Six Sigma project. There is no standard certification body, and different certification services are offered by various quality associations and other providers against a fee."

I found free yellow belt training online. Seems reputable, but not sure.

Well, the training is free, but $99 to take the certification exam. Sorry for the bad info.
