Starting August 1, 2017, applicants for the professional counseling and marriage and family therapy licenses will need to complete 60 semester hours as opposed to the current 48 and 45 credit hours, respectively.

Thank you for posting. With this change I wonder if insurance companies will lessen the red tape surrounding patient-client coverage. I've read that insurance companies will more than likely cover charges incurred with a Master's degree-level social worker than a LPC. So, now that the requirements to be a licensed LPC or LMFT is the completion of 60 credits they will be in alignment with the majority of accredited social work programs. What do you think?

Insurance companies have been required to reimburse for the mental health services of LPCs, LMFTs, etc. after that part of the Affordable Care Act went into effect. However, it's already well-known that LPCs and LMFTs have more counseling training than LMSWs and LCSWs. I don't know why insurance companies were more willing to reimburse for the services of social workers.
