BYU FLATS ( foreign language test)
#11
Reply from TESC makes me laugh. " The only foreign language test the college accepts is the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) "

Even the written responses are getting dumb. smh

TESC does accept New York University Foreign Language Proficiency Testing, Foreign Service Institute Examinations, Defense Language Institute's Defense Language Proficiency Tests, and Torah Accreditation Liaison in addition to the Oral Proficiency International Foreign Language Exams.

I wrote to them and mentioned all the foreign language tests that are ACE approved and also those that are listed on their site. Also I mentioned that I know for sure that Excelsior will take FLATs. This is new answer I got,
"The college will accept the BYU FLAT exam if the credits show as institutional, college-level credit on the official BYU transcript."

I hope that it means that they will take it. ( still not quite sure about it).

I didn't read the whole website thoroughly, but you have to make sure that passing those tests will earn you credits directly from BYU. You need an official BYU transcript. With a few exceptions, TESC requires that credits either come from a regionally accredited school or be ACE or NCCRS recommended for credit. TESC has an office that will evaluate the programs of non-academic organizations, but the organization has to pay for the assessment.

Thank you very much for the old thread. Somebody had this question before and posted from BYU site:
Q: As a non-BYU student, can I receive BYU credit through these exams?
A: No. BYU does not grant credit to students who do not have a BYU transcript.

And after that the person that got credit for FLAT at EC college wrote, "The fact that BYU doesn't grant credit is not important. They send a report with the credit recommendations and this is sufficient for EC to award credit."
The problem for me that I do not understand if this will be sufficient for TESC according to their answer, "The college will accept the BYU FLAT exam if the credits show as institutional, college-level credit on the official BYU transcript."
Information from BYU website, " Our office will send the results to the school or institution indicated on the registration form, but it is each student’s responsibility to arrange for the credits to be recorded at the school or institution of choice. BYU cannot grant credit to non-BYU students." Also, "BEFORE REGISTERING FOR A FLATS TEST contact your school or institution to see whether they will award you credit from your university based on your performance on a FLATS test. All tests are proctored. It is the student's responsibility to make necessary arrangements with the proctor to take a test. All tests are multiple-choice and are scored as pass/fail. Students are allowed 2 ½ hours to complete the test. Please allow two to three weeks for completion of the reporting process."

Seems it will be so nice if TESC just would answer "yes" or "no" to the question. I am still confused... with leaning more to "no". That is why I would like to know if there is somebody that got credits for FLAT in TESC as non-BYU student.

Is it still an inexpensive test? If so, would it hurt anything to take it and see what happens with TESC? (Are you already fluent or would you need to study?) If you don't get a definitive answer now, I'm sure others would benefit from knowing if this works out for you.

Wouldn't it make more sense to just take the NYU test? We already know TESC accepts that. All you have to do is find a proctor.

Thanks to all very much for the suggestions. I probably will go with NYU tests. It just seems for me that FLATs are so much easier and cheaper ($50 vs $300 for 12 points exam, or $100 vs $600 if I take them for two languages). Does anybody know if NYU will hold test results until I need them? ( I am planning to enroll in TESC when I have enough credits, which may be, hopefully, at the end of this year or at the beginning of the next year).

That's my suggestion. NYU exam options go up to 16 credits for $400 (less credit & cost if you won't want to write the essay).
