Please Help! My newb-itis is killing me...
#1
Hi everyone! I can't describe how happy I've been to find this forum. After stepping away from school for over 10 years and unforgettable good times and nightmares in owning a business, I'm ready to get back on track and finish what I started. Needless to say I would love any help or tips that you guys can share with my plans to knock these things out. Sorry in advance for the long posts! Sad it includes an academic evaluation.

Here's what I've already done...

104 Credits Taken at Brick and Mortar Colleges before my 10 year hiatus.
I've Applied to TESC and gotten my academic evaluation and wondering if there's a magical incantation I can use to persuade someone in that office to put my Calculus I and II into my area of Study instead of tossing it into the practical skills section....
I've read far more than I should in this forum and the other sister forum for these kinds of degree completion programs

Here's what I need ideas with...

First;
TESC recommended BA in Natural Sciences and Math since my credits were all from when I was premed minded and now I'm confused as to whether I should push forward with my initial idea to go for BA in CS or just finish the BA in Nat. Sci. and Math.
1. Would I have any hope for a Masters in CS if I have 0 CS classes when I finish?
2. Should I just add the second major in CS so I can get the needed coursework and since I only really have 7 or 8 classes for that degree and since it shares at least 6 credits in the concentration with my math degree?
3. Should i ignore and forget about the BA in Nat. Sci. and Math even though I am only 3 classes away from that and just take the classes I need for CS?

Arggghhhh!! My brain feels like molten lava right now...

Second,
Here's a peek at my academic eval for Nat. Sci. and Math from TESC. I've removed my good grades to save face for that one class with that one teacher..... some of you may know what I'm talking about. lol... Big Grin

Now for the last questions.

As you can see above they've put my Calculus in the practical skills area for some reason instead of inside the concentration area???
If I took college algebra and trigonometry through ALEKS (which I'm thinking of doing before hurling myself into the icy depths of Calculus three and Linear Algebra which I am thinking of using to finish this degree) would that move my calculus I and/or calculus II into the concentration area as well to finish up this degree? Or would they just shove it into more electives?

Thanks a million to anyone who's made it this far in reading all of this! And a big thank you for any suggestions and ideas you guys might be able to share. Smile

You can only have 6 credits at the 100 level in your concentration, so you will not be able to use your calculus credits there as you already have chemistry filling that slot. Since you plan on a masters in CS anyway, that levels the playing field somewhat between the Natural Science and CS bachelors, as far as number of credits go.

Both of OP's calculus courses are at the 200 level, so they can be used in the area of study. But will probably need more upper level credits.

As I see it the problem is you only have 8 upper level 300-400 level Science/math courses that is why they din't put you Calc, I & II or you A & P I and II into your area of study. You don't show it herebut the area of study requires a minimum of 18 upper level credits so the 10 credits you have left in your area of concentration must all be 300-400 level.

I hope this makes sense. I am pretty sure you could find some upper level courses in CS that you could use to fill these in.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Smile
@ironheadjack and @Lindagerr, I'm planning to take Calculus III and Linear Algebra through LSU correspondence for the remaining 7 UL credits. I've been told by 3 or 4 advisors that the requirement is 15UL credits I sure hope that many advisors would drop the ball... but anything's possibly these days with customer service... Sad At any rate, I was wondering if you guys think the Calculus would most likely be moved over to the Concentration area if I took another LL math course through ALEKS? Any thoughts?

It's 18UL credits required but the capstone course counts for 3UL credits. So you only need to take 15 other UL credits.

If you take ALEKS intermediate and college algebra, send it to TESC, and then simply ask/tell them to move the calculus courses to your area of study.

Thanks ironheadjack! Once again I forgot about the dreaded Capstone course....... I'll try that out since the ALEKS courses sound pretty doable based on what I've read in this forum. Anyone have any input on the CS vs Math vs Both part of the question? Thanks again for the input everyone! Smile

I don't see the reason to do both. If you're really wanting to attend a graduate program in CS, then just go for the CS degree. You might be able to get in with the natural science degree, but then you would have to worry about fitting in the typical prerequisites.

Thanks for the reply Sanantone! Reason why I'm wavering on getting the second is because one of the classes I plan on taking to wrap up in the Math degree actually would actually cross over to the CS degree, leaving me with only 2 actually classes remaining to take for the Math degree and considering that at least one of those two courses can be filled by the upper level CS class I will have to take for the CS degree anyway, it only leaves me with 1 actual class and the capstone?? Am I right? It all seems so very close it hurts! Sigh.... And on top of this, my thinking is that the more math I get under my belt the better off I will be for CS. Hopefully I'm thinking on the right path here...

You don't need to take the ALEKS courses you need the capstone and 7 more upper level credits. The ALEKS courses will not fill those upper levels. I might be wrong with these new requirements it is a little different , but

You need:
Responsible Ethical Leadership (Not Started)

__________________________________________________ ___________________ 3 credits
Liberal Arts Capstone (3 SH)

___ LIB-495___ _________________________ ______________________ 1 course needed

A: Concentration (24) (In Progress)
Semester Hours Completed: 14.00 Required: 24 Remaining: 10
__________________________________________________ ___________________ 3 credits-- can be 200 level could switch Anat & Phys. I to here and add 3 new free electives
__________________________________________________ ___________________ 3 credits must be upper level
__________________________________________________ ___________________ 3 credits must be upper level
__________________________________________________ ___________________ 1 credits must be upper level

Some else please correct me if I am wrong
