Help a Poor Newb?

Hello!
I am super excited to be joining the IC community and getting my CLEP's out of the way. I've been creeping on these forums for a couple of days now and was wondering if any of you could help me with a couple questions (& yes! I did search old threads before hand)

1. I don't see American Lit on IC, what was the best way to study for that?
   
2. The same for College Comp, is that the same as English comp? (I plan on taking th essay!)

Complete Idiots Guide to Am Lit Amazon.com: The Complete Idiot's Guide to American Literature (0021898633781): Laurie E. Rozakis: Books

Read it, take notes, know it. Books out of print and a little pricey, but the e-book is affordable. When my daughter took it her CC required an essay on this one too.

I loved CLEP American Literature w/ CD-ROM: Amazon.com: Books for Am. Lit.

For College Comp, you just need to make sure you understand what good grammar is, for the MC part. The other practice you need to do is write essays.

I think there are only two things you can do to prepare for this test. One is to get some familiarity with some lit terms (google for a list). However, there aren't a lot of questions about them.

Second, take a practice test or two to get a feel for what you'll see on the CLEP. I took a Peterson practice test, but REA has them as well (neither are free, but the REA one is cheaper if you buy their study guide as it comes with two practice tests).

If you are an InstantCert Member than you should have access to the Specific feedback forum. American Lit is located here:http://www.degreeforum.net/specific-exam...-clep.html. It will give you a good overview of what to study for. Also there are notes that can be downloaded for your review.

English Comp is now known as College Comp with Modular if you want English Comp I & II credit. Many universities and colleges only accept the one that is with modular (2 essays). The link for the specific forum is located here: http://www.degreeforum.net/specific-exam...-clep.html

For a good guide of what to study for I would suggest going to Free Clep Prep.com. He does a great job of explaining the exams and what to study for along with resources that can be used to achieve your goals.

Check with your school about College Composition. Some schools want College Composition, some want College Composition Modular. My kids and I all got 6 hours credit for College Composition, not College Composition Modular. But that was our school, not yours. This is your future, not mine. Don't go by what I say, don't go by what some clerk at your school tells you on the phone, go by the written, official policy of your school.

The op is asking about American Lit. Not analyzing and interpreting Lit. There is a lot of studying to do for Am Lit.

Hi! And welcome to IC!!

Just thought I'd share what I did to prepare for the College Composition exam (the one with the essay). It's always smart to check with the school you're looking at to make sure you know which one they accept as 6 credits.

To practice for the essays, I reviewed the section for writing essays in the Princeton Review Cracking the ACT, which I had used for my ACT and found quite helpful for explaining how to write argumentatively. For the source essay, make sure you know how to cite sources (check any grammar book...MLA style is just fine). It is also important to practice being timed while writing your essays, because 30 minutes goes by very quickly!

If you need more help with the multiple choice portion, check out College Composition CLEP Study Guide - College Composition CLEP Study Guide - Free-Clep-Prep.com. I didn't personally use it, but looks like a really good study resource. And I know several people have mentioned that Princeton Review's Cracking the CLEP is very helpful too.

The most helpful thing for me was the Peterson's Practice Tests. I took all three of these (scoring 82%, 80%, and 82%), and they were right on for the actual test. They give you good practice for writing essays and has good sample essays to look over.

I also went through the CLEP Official Study Guide practice test, and scored about 85%. This is always a good representation of the actual test. If you don't have access to Peterson's PT, see if you can get a couple of different versions (from 2011 onwards because that's when the CC test was changed) of the Official Study Guide from the library to give you different tests on which to practice.
