Coursera - Non-approved courses for credit
#1
Has anyone had luck taking any of the Coursera courses that weren't already approved for credit, & getting credit through TESC? I'm seriously debating taking the human trafficking course (taught by Jacquelyn Meshelemiah). Also, I haven't taken any of the Coursera courses yet. It's showing an August 2014 session. Does this mean I'd actually have to wait almost a full year to take the course? Also, on the OSU website (taught by the same professor) it is listed as SOCWORK 5005 - Human Trafficking: Domestic and Global Perspectives. Am I correct in thinking that actually would be an upper level course? I don't think I need any more LL, but if I could get credit for this as upper level, that would be awesome!

I wish I could get my degree from Coursera. Their courses are amazing.

Hi JBtesc:

I was just looking at the Coursera website. I noticed you can take the classes for free & get a certificate signed by the instructor. Or you can pay for a Signature Track class & get an official verified certificate.
Do you know if TESC would be OK with the free class certificate? Or do they have to have the Signature Track certificate before you would get credit?
I am seriously thinking about going with TESC for my degree & I am trying to figure out the best source of classes.

You are right, Coursera classes look pretty awesome....Smile

I highly doubt they would give you credit even if you pay for the Signature Track. Other than FEMA and certificates/licenses, TESC only awards credit for ACE-approved, NCCRS-approved, and regionally accredited courses. TESC won't even accept courses from nationally accredited schools, so I doubt they will accept unaccredited courses. They will probably tell you to complete a PLA.

As far as getting a certificate for the courses, I think you have to turn in assignments that will be graded. It looks like grading will only occur when the class session is open. If that's the case, you do have to wait until next year to take the course. I tried to take one of their ACE-approved courses, and you couldn't even do anything until the class was opened. At the time I looked at the course, the next session was about a year away. Coursera sucks for earning college credits.

Wow, thanks for the tip Sanantone....Sad

I was really considering using it for a source of credit...that is good to know so there is not a waste of time & effort.

That's too bad, it really look like something workable...

Oh, well back to the drawing board.

I will definitely be using InstantCert starting this week to study for my General Ed classes & I really like Education Portal. The videos are interactive & taught be very good instructors.

They are awesome. Best actual free education out there.

American Council on Education Recommends 5 MOOCs for Credit - Technology - The Chronicle of Higher Education

You'd have to talk to your advisor about any of this anyway but I don't know what TESC does with 2 sh/credit courses...
If they accepted 3 of them I guess it would work out. Or if you already had a weird number of FEMAs...

+1
TESC is generous in quantity of what they'll accept within the parameters of the type of credit they'll accept. For instance, you can take an unlimited amount of CLEP, as long as it fits in your degree distribution. This is sometimes mixed up with them being willing to take unauthorized sources of credit. I believe this is the case with coursera. There might be other schools that would bite, you could probably try any of the NA for profits, even Penn Foster.
