@Clep101 -Yes, APA uses footnotes and endnotes (with superscript indicators). This is what I meant by it is good to have multiple references. I have used APA exclusively in my work and in approx 95% of my college courses.
@burbuja0512 - The college composition courses were in MLA style. If all of the students at COSC cited incorrectly they need to retool the cornerstone. Graduate work is all about research, it's up to the students to research the papers and format correctly. Of course I come from a research background so I'm jaded.
The software most talked about by the grad students at TESC is stylease APA Format Software | Automatic Research Paper Formatting | StyleEase
I actually use endnotes professionally; I also use i-cite, word citations and more important my own writing skills. I cannot afford errors that are made in style changes.

EC was very strict and did a lot of papers all in APA. APA doesn't use footnotes or subscript. I use OWL for reference along with a software program called Stylease. It works with Word and formats you paper for you. You still have to know where and how to put the citations, but it lays it out for you. For my citations and bibliographies I use bibme.org and son of a citation. Both are websites. Some school libraries also have bibliography makers and citation generation when you look things up. EC had a citation generator. Just make sure you select the proper format because these sites usually do any format such as MLA, APA, Chicago etc. I hated APA when I started at EC, but it did prepare in the APA writing department, although, I did have to go through an edition change which messed me up and made me nuts...more than I already am! Good luck!

Wow.. thanks so much for all of the info everyone!! I have quite a bit to review right now. Just need to find a tool that will work with Spanish and I'll be set
@Bricabrac. I'm pretty sure that the reason for the Cornerstone is to teach students stuff like that. Keep in mind that my ONLY class at COSC was the Capstone and every single person in my class was from the generation of students that had not been required to take a Capstone. COSC is in a unique position (well all of the Big 3, really) because the majority of the students there have not been at COSC throughout their educational career. Most of the people I met had a hodge-podge of credits from a variety of schools and chose COSC not because of their liberal testing policies, but because they found a school that would take their collection of credits and turn them into a degree. However, what I think COSC realized is that with the varied student backgrounds, they were getting people who weren't very strong in certain areas such as the ability to take an online class successfully and also basic citation and writing questions. That's why they're forcing the two classes now as in many cases, the Capstone was the students first and last class at COSC.

I'm sorry but I will have to respectfully disagree. APA does include footnotes and endnotes. I again refer you to style guides. Since in the pharmaceutical industry, specifically clinical research and medical affairs department, we publish articles and papers on a quarterly basis that are written in APA style.
This is a quick reference I found online.
http://www.sourceaid.com/reference/pdf/c...-guide.pdf
Pg 9
Footnotes
General Guidelines
1. Footnotes are used to provide information that is not essential to the thesis of the text.
2. Footnotes are used sparingly.
3. Statements, for which there is information in the footnotes, are superscripted with a sequential number that corresponds with the relevant footnote.
4. The footnotes page is placed at the end of the text preceding the Reference List page.
Pg 10
Endnotes
In most styles, the only difference between footnotes and endnotes is their location within the text. Traditionally, endnotes are located on a separate page and footnotes are located at the bottom of the page on which their associated statements appear. APA style is an exception to these endnote/footnote distinctions. APA footnotes replace endnotes, but the footnotes appear in the traditional location of endnotes (on a separate page preceding the reference list).

I have written a gazillion APA papers and I know this backward and forward now.
There are no superscripts. Here is how it goes:
Say you read an article and the guy says that France has 70% of its power delivered by nuclear. To cite that as a paraphrase you can just do this.
Nuclear power is being used to fuel 70% of power needs in France (Yoder, 2011).
Then if you have a quote:
Yoder (2011) stated that "nuclear power is way cool!" (p. 45).
If you want to quote more than 40 words you need to set it off in a block quote. Which is a paragraph with .5" of indentation on the left.
For your references, you get the hang of it, but if you are using scholarly journals as references through a site like proquest.com, there is a Cite link at the top of the article which will automatically format a reference for the references section in any number of formats including APAv6.
Your paragraphs are to be double spaced. The references are single spaced with a double space between them. The first line has no indentation but the rest of the lines have a .5" hanging indentation.
Google purdue OWL and read it a bit.
Once you get the hang of it, its easy. I stressed out a lot at first but now I'm good.
Zotero is also nice. Any page you are on, you can click some buttons and it will add it to a list of references in Zotero. Then you can export that reference as a bibliography item just like the Cite link in proquest.com.
Your school should provide you access to atleast 5 scholarly research libraries where you can search for appropriate source material. Appropriate materials include dissertations, scholarly journals, sometimes trade journals and sometimes newspaper articles.
Peer reviewed scholarly journal articles are the best though.
Good luck and have fun!

I give up....
@Burbuja since you work in the healthcare industry I think it important that you know the ins and outs of citing, especially when you are at a good school. Your instructors will take note, believe me, and it will serve you well in your educational and professional career.

It would be pretty cool if they actually teach the various writing styles in English Comp 1 & 2. I only learned MLA when I took English 1301. I had to google my way through APA and now CMS styles. I have to say that it looks like Chicago/Turabian is less confusing than the other two. But I guess they are all meant for different professions.

Ohhhhh my head is going to explode! Lol I guess it goes to show that "someone" out there isn't teaching APA citation correctly or there wouldn't be this much confusion.
hilarious And I don't know who is right, but I know that you all seem to know more than I do!
@Bricabrac - the good news is that I switched to chemical software back in January, but a good percentage of my clients are big pharma (who buy both chemical and medical software). Since my main point of contact is usually the library, I have to sound as intelligent as possible!

Burbuja0512,
I thought as much. Unfortunately it seems folks are misunderstanding what "style" means. There are different style guidelines for writing an APA paper. One of those "styles" includes footnotes/endnotes. This is the style that is used professionally* so better to use, or at least understand it now, because it is the style that will be used in your career. For some reason some are not getting it (sigh).
I have the pleasure of working directly with doctors (MD/DO/PhD/PharmD...you know, those who teach the grad students) and all are published many times over. I also typed up many papers for my supervisor who recently completed his global eMBA TRIUM Global Executive MBA, top ranked alliance of NYU Stern, LSE and HEC Paris. So I speak not only for graduate science programs but also from papers written in an international, top tier, graduate business program.
It's definitely time for me to take a break from this site. I have become exhausted by those who think they know it all. I thought we still had something to learn or why would we still be in school? My view is that I will hopefully continue to learn something new everyday.
But back to the point, here is a free source for grad/scholarly research ( SSRN FAQ) ...maybe papers written by grad students at Stanford, Harvard, etc .... can get the point across better than I....you have plenty of papers to review both for style SSRN Stanford Graduate School of Business Research Paper Series and to use for your own scholarly research sources.
Here is a link for international business and management section SSRN MRN International Business & Management Network
Good luck and enjoy your program! I know you will do well!

Here is an example from the Purdue OWL site.
According to Jones (1998), "Students often had difficulty using APA style, especially when it was their first time" (p. 199).
Jones (1998) found "students often had difficulty using APA style" (p. 199); what implications does this have for teachers?

After you write your paper, send it into smartthinking.com and ask them to check it for APA style.
They are an excellent resource and know their stuff.
