Learning a Language
#11
Hi Burbuja, I cannot answer your question since I have not taught myself a language. But I am currently learning Portuguese myself. Maybe we could help each other...

I love the romance languages, too, especially Portuguese. I would like to learn (in this order) Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, then maybe Latin or French.

It will be much easier to learn Portuguese since you already know Spanish. My mother is fluent in Portuguese (she is from Portugal) and she can communicate in Spanish although she never really learned Spanish. The two languages do have a lot in common. Many of the words are the same or similar but the pronunciation is quite different. To me Portuguese is pronounced like English, but softer. For instance, "s" has a slight "sh" sound, the vowels are short (ah for a, etc.), j and g are soft like the g in beige (I really dislike the way j is pronounced in Spanish), x sounds like s or sh, etc. Some letters are pronounced the same as Spanish, like r. There are some difficult combinations like lh (pronounced similar to ll in Spanish but with more of an "l" sound), but mostly it is not difficult. You should have no problem reading Portuguese and understanding what the words mean, so you will have to focus on pronunciation, speaking and listening. It is the same way with me, I can read Spanish (very limited) but don't ask me to speak Spanish!

As for accent, the accent in Mexico is different than Argentina which is different than Catalan Spain which is different than Galicia Spain, etc. Even the pronunciation can be different. Likewise Brazilian Portuguese is quite different than European Portuguese (the pronunciation is different, too - the pronunciation I gave might not apply completely to Brazilian Portuguese, since I don't know Brazilian Portuguese). Since you know Mexican Spanish you should not have a problem with Portuguese (From Portugal, at least - I don't know about Brazil). Mexican Spanish is closer to Portuguese than Spanish from Spain and some other countries.

As I said, my mother is fluent in Portuguese, and she has being teaching my brother and I, but we don't seem to pick up languages very well. My mother, on the other hand, is good with languages. In addition to knowing Portuguese and English fluently, my mother can communicate in Spanish and French, and she used to know Afrikaans (a version of Dutch spoken in South Africa) although she can't remember much because she hasn't used Afrikaans in many years. I believe she also used to be able to communicate in Dutch and she was able to communicate when she was in Germany... somehow!

I am sorry for turning this post into an essay! Confusedmilelol:

Hope this helps!

How cool that you have someone there to teach you and how impressive that she knows several languages! Don't think that you don't pick up languages very well! You may just need more practice or perhaps a slightly different method. In addition to speaking with your mother, maybe you could find some Portuguese music that you like or even a television show? Of course if you have satellite tv like Dish or DirectTv, you could pay money to add foreign channels, or you could just search on Youtube and find something for free. You could also regularly read the news in Portuguese. Here is a list of Brazilian news sites: Brazilian Newspapers : Brasileiro Jornais : Jornais do Brasil : Newspapers from Brazil : Brazilian News, though you may want to google the same thing for Portugal if that's what interests you more. I don't know where you live, but if the city is big enough, you might also be able to find a Portuguese Language club through Meetup or through a local University to have someone else to practice with other than your mom ...just some thoughts. I'm sure you'll pick it up!

@Lindagerr - that is good to hear and very reassuring! Your comment made me remember that there have been a few occasions when I've been watching tv in Mexico (years ago - haven't lived there since 2002), where a Brazilian soccer player was on an interview and they don't provide a translator. I remember the first time I saw that, I wondered why I was having such a hard time understanding their Spanish... then I realized it wasn't Spanish. However, I did get the gist of what was being said, so hopefully this is a good sign. Ok - now I'm getting excited for my RS to arrive! Smile

Hi Burbuja,
I used the FSI courses for Spanish back in the day, and for Brasilian Portuguese as well. If you can stand the complete lack of aesthetics, and repetition, repetition repetition, it is a great course. The focus on pronunciation and on substitution drills is a little bit basic, and at times boring, but it does help to master the accent to a level that if not native at least is easy to understand and avoids the "gringo" accent! Level 1 and 2 is available for Brasilian Portuguese at http://fsi-language-courses.org

Hi Burbuja0512!

When I was looking for Peterson's options (again), I noticed that my local library offers an online language course/program called Mango Languages through their website. I do not know anything about it (method, level, etc.), but I thought of you, since it offers Portuguese. Maybe your local library has something similar or better.

Thanks for the info, NAP. The local library is a great thought. I don't know why I never think to look there.. I really have to get in the habit of at least checking for free resources.

My library has Mango as well, I had forgotten all about it! I started it once and spent half a day playing on it, lol. Seemed pretty basic, but I didn't spend long enough to get into the higher levels, maybe it gets more advanced.

I might just take a stab at trying to learn Portuguese as well, (in between watching episodes of Bones, House and Dexter of course). When I was in Korea, I went to a Brazilian restaurant and actually carried a conversation with the Brazilian waitress. She didn't know English, just Korean and Portuguese, but between my Spanglish and her Portuguese we actually understood each other. I agree, both languages are very similar and overlap a lot.

I would have to agree with PonyGirl. It seemed that RS had an emphasis on vocabulary, but little help with grammar, verbs, etc. I was recently with a (native) spanish speaker that mentioned that on a stay in Portugal she had no trouble communicating with the Portuguese. She would speak Spanish, they would speak Portuguese and they could both understood each other.
As a semi-fluent Spanish speaker, I think it would be neat to learn Portuguese someday. First though I need to work on making myself more fluent in Spanish.

I think finding a language partner is a good idea too. There are plenty of people online that would help you practice in addition to just chatting (via text, audio, or video). It's a cool way to make friends around the world also. italki: Learn a language online is a popular one, but most of the users on there are studying Mandarin Chinese, but there are quite a few others, i'm sure if you googled Language Exchange you'll find plenty.

This is in addition to studying. I recommend doing any program you like, and finding a language partner with which you can review every topic, and just chat with (preferably orally). That's the BEST way to learn, and it's free. Of course, if you can find someone to hang out with in person and practice with, that would be ideal...but it can be a little harder to find someone.

Oh and I forgot...with language partners you also help them with their language skills, usually tons just want to practice their English with you.
