Wow... thank you all for the suggestions. Looks like I have a lot of ideas. I do think I have been focused too much on "socialization" ever since DS dropped his group of friends that he had. I hate to see him lonely but I need to remember that it IS a conscious choice. He had a ton of friends and made a deliberate decision to not spend his time with people that didn't meet his standards. So, I shouldn't want to rush him into getting a new group to hang out with. He needs to take his time and it may take dabbling in a few different activities.
We were at the county fair on Sunday and actually met some 4H people so I will probably start there but I love some of the other suggestions and had never even heard of CAP... sounds very cool!

Wow, there are a lot interesting ideas that I hadn't thought of. Even though we don't homeschool, we are still trying to figure out what my 8 y/o daughter likes to do. It seems she like to do everything, but then gets bored after a few weeks of doing a new activity. So far the only thing she likes doing constantly that doesn't bore her is going to the shooting range and shooting my guns. I think she can outshoot me already. She knows everything about gun safety, which is my #1 concern, and now her curiousity about guns is gone, unlike most other kids her age. I'm taking her to kill her first deer this year when I go home on vacation from Afghanistan. Check out the pictures of her targets.

My sons were active in Scouts, volunteered for the Salvation Army several times a year, participated in Relay for Life, and participated in Shooters Education. They took classes for karate, art, swimming, and golf. They also attended youth events through the public library on a regular basis.
Somewhere else mentioned 4-H here. It's a wonderful program. If you have a vo-tech or community college nearby, they often offer youth activities. Check with your skating rink and bowling alley to see if either offer any organized activities. If you have an American Legion, Elks Lodge, or Eagles Lodge in your community, all three organizations are usually good about presenting youth programs. If you have any art or science museums nearby, you might find youth activities offered through them.
