Tuition, Enrollment and Evaluation at TESC
#1
I have a question about when you pay which fees to TESC. Some of it is hinted at in this thread.

The first thing one does is gat an Evaluation for $75.

After that can you begin CLEP, DSST, etc to start racking up the credits BEFORE you pay another penny to TESC?

Can one combine past credits from an AS with credits from testing out and only pay TESC right at the end (after earning the necessary credits) for Enrollment and Graduation fees?

Does the number of credits you are submitting (from testing out) impact the Enrollment fee?

Thanks.

If you have previous credits from any source and you are looking to see what degree they would work into, then it is a good idea to pay the $75 to TESC and send transcripts. After evaluation, you will then know what classes you need to either take or test out of. You have 6 months from the time you pay $75. If you do not want to take any online classes through TESC, you could wait until all of your testing is done, then enroll, resubmit transcripts (if needed), send additional test results and go from there.

You can transfer in up to 80 credits from community college including AS degree. You can wait until the very end to enroll and subsequently graduate if you plan ahead and figure in the time TESC takes to process all of your info. They can be slow. Number of credits does not impact tuition other than you choose comprehensive or enrolled options.

You can CLEP, DSST, and TECEP your way through all but ONE class. You must take at least one class, so you can get a TESC GPA. They'll accept transfer credits galore, but you must have at least a 2.0 GPA with them, and transfer credits do not count towards your TESC GPA. The only way to get it is to take a class with them (online or guided study...not TECEP, e-Pack, PLA, etc).

So...pay the $75 application fee, get your evaluation, spend a few weeks or months testing out of everything your evaluation says you need except one course. Then, before your six month window of applicant / evaluation window expires, enroll in and begin that one or more course(es). At that point, you'll be considered an enrolled student, and when your course is complete and passed with a 2.0 or better GPA, you'll be eligible to graduate.

Does TESC charge a fee for "accepting" credits earned via testing? Or does one simply pay the lowest enrollment fee and take the one course for the GPA?

The latter. Accepting transfer credits is part of the evaluation process, which is part of the application fee. Transfer in all you like for that $75. Don't expect them to update each time they receive a test transcript until you do pay that enrollment fee - so track from the evaluation yourself and call the express line with any questions - but if you go the testing route with just one course for a GPA, you'll pay from the Enrolled Options cost sheet. Thomas Edison State College | Enrolled Options Plan (annual enrollment + technology fee + credits + graduation fee at the end). It's very reasonable if you plan to test out of pretty much everything. Otherwise, the Comprehensive Tuition plan is the way to go.

Thank you very much. I guess it is certainly worth $75 to see what they say. Am I correct in believing that the only risk to NOT enrolling is that the requirements for the degree may change on me, or that the prices will go up?

I think so? They could also change their transfer policies, which may alter a future evaluation, but others would shed much better light there. I opted to take most of my credits in courses (comprehensive tuition) because it suits my learning style better (personal preference only).

Hate for this to be my first post here after lurking for so long, but I thought I read about TESC grads on this board that graduated without a GPA (ie, took no classes)? I'm a month into waiting for my evaluation, and I've spent that time testing like a fiend trying to get everything I think I'll need settled by the next graduation date. Even if my evaluation works out worse than expected, I think I have a reasonable shot at wrapping up my degree reqs by the end of the month. It would be a bit disheartening to be "done" before September and have to wait til March to graduate over one class.

You do not have to take a course at TESC, unless you want a GPA. Others on this board have graduated from TESC without a GPA with no problem. If you do take a course at TESC, the GPA has to be at least a 2.0 or you can't graduate.
