social sciences and history clep
#1
I have my social sciences and history clep tomorrow and it is my final clep to get my degree. I just took the princeton cracking the clep test and got about 66% correct. Does any one have any experience with both the clep test and the princeton test and how closely they resemble each other?

I scored a 81 on the Cracking the CLEP test and a 73 on the actual CLEP. I theorized at the time that a person could score 15 to 20 points lower on the practice test and still be fine.

No guarantees though. I'd probably study a little bit more if I was you, but I tend to overstudy so...

There might be some more information on the Specific feedback section. If you're a paying member, then you'll have access to that area. I'm not a paying member right now, but I am planning on taking that exam end of this week.

Another option is, try taking the practice tests through this website Free Practice Clep Tests! - Free-Clep-Prep.com
Most people say that getting a 70%+ on a Peterson practice test will mean a probable pass on a CLEP. I've used this website for as many CLEPs as I could because the practice tests really help me gauge myself on preparedness. Follow the directions and take a few tests. Study what you got wrong, and then take the real thing. Good luck

One note on the Peterson's... for Social Sciences, they are WAAAAAAAAAAAAY (I'd add more emphasis if I could) harder than the actual exam. I only averaged a 52% on all three of the exams and as noted earlier, I scored a 73 on the actual CLEP.

If you're using them just to pick up a couple pieces of trivia, that's fine, but don't be freaked out if you scored in the 30s or 40s on them. They're wicked hard and very obscure. The CLEP is NOTHING like that. It's very straightforward.

Yes, but could they be used for preparation and comparison of readiness? I took one of the tests a week ago cold, and scored a 39%. Does that indicate that I may only need a little more study?

Perhaps... I just think there's a sample size issue at play here. There's so few questions that are representative of the actual difficulty level, that there's more chance that the result that you're getting is a result of luck or noise (of course, going over the answers afterwards would help to tell you that).

Basically, my theory is that there's a certain level of luck in each test you take. If you're taking a practice test where you're only encountering 25% of the possible question-types that you'll encounter on the actual exam, then your score is a lot less reliable than on a test where it matches fairly close to the actual test (say like 75%). On a practical level, what good is answering questions about the fifth emperor of the Byzantine Empire's style of rule when the actual test is just gonna ask you who wrote the Declaration of Independence? You're not gonna encounter questions of that level of specificity on this CLEP, so doing the Peterson's is almost (but not entirely!) useless.

In my humble opinion, of course. See, when I took the Social Science CLEP, I almost psyched myself out trying to delve into the specifics of a lot of different subjects in the last few days before the test. In retrospect, this was a bad idea, as I was actually more confident prior to my cramming. And sometimes, confidence goes a long way in testing.
