Second Degree: BA in Religion - tesu-acct-student - 09-23-2016

Hi all, since applying for a second degree is free for alumni, I went ahead and did it. I am toying with the idea of getting a BA in Religion, and have copied/pasted the academic eval below. I know that I could go for a Master's but I have personal reasons for wanting possibly do this, then maybe do a master's later. I have the GPA for it but not sure I want to go that route at this time.

Right now the eval is showing 40 more credits, but I was hoping to have 33 credits (or fewer, obviously) in order to complete the degree, and to do them all via portfolio, except the capstone unless that can be done via portfolio as well (I don't think it can but let me know please). 33 credits would cost me less than $1200 via portfolio.

I have a few questions.

1. I thought I read somewhere that for a second degree, all of the gen ed would be considered as finished. Is that correct?
2. Can my speech class go into the Oral Communication slot?
3. For Information Literacy, what about the CS220 Intro Computer Basic (it was a BASIC programming class)?
4. For Civic Engagement, what about SOC-101?
5. Do I have to take the cornerstone?

I deleted my name and my grades.

Any feedback is welcome. Thank you.

Second Degree: BA in Religion - TrailRunr - 09-23-2016

I'm a second bachelor's student at TESU, so I can answer your questions.

1. Yes, you need to get a GE waiver from advising for everything that is listed as incomplete in the GE section. Tell advising you're a second bachelor's and that you know that GE is supposed to be waived. This process is not automatic so you need to tell them to do it. I would do a 30 minute phone appointment to fix your GE because there is a lot to fix.
2. Doesn't matter. When you get the GE waiver, they will plug in one of your courses from the other credits pile. Make sure you don't need the course they choose. I would put in accounting courses for the unfilled GE.
3. Same as #2.
4. Same as #2
5. No, the cornerstone is a GE requirement. It's not outside the GE like the capstone is.

You are responsible getting 24 brand new credits for the capstone and the area of study. That doesn't seem to be a problem in your case.

Not sure if Accounting will be able to be moved to GE, as business courses are not considered Gen Ed. If you're not a business major, then they normally go in the Free Electives section.

But, with the changes to the majors, maybe this has changed as well, not sure (the BALS now has concentrations including General Management & HR).

Second Degree: BA in Religion - TrailRunr - 09-24-2016

They need a placeholder in the GE slot that you don't need in your degree program. Accounting is the old major and I believe it isn't required for a religion degree. It could be physical education or cooking, or whatever.

Second Degree: BA in Religion - Leedeedee - 09-27-2016

I have a foreign (UK) bachelor's degree, can I have my GE waived too? First I've heard of this!

No.

From my eval:
"Based on University policy, all general education requirements, other
than those labeled as "DEGREE REQUIREMENT" will be satisfied based on
the completion of a first bachelor's degree from a
regionally-accredited US institution."

Thanks, it was a nice dream while it lasted! Smile

Second Degree: BA in Religion - Notgodot - 09-28-2016

You can have your UK courses evaluated and submitted to the university of your choice, for around $165.
