If you've forgotten most of the French you knew, spend a couple of weeks getting back up to speed with something like Duolingo.

Or you can just do Sophia Spanish.

The thing is, I actually really enjoy French. I've been kind of on a duolingo loop for a few years; go hard for a while, forget the app exists for several months, start again.

I'd try an exam, but the listening portion scares me. I can barely understand what's going on in tv shows or movies without subtitles.

Edit: whoops, I meant to reply to the person who recommended the clep exam. I'll look into the ACTFL!

The exams were created by ACTFL: https://www.actfl.org/actfl-assessments/actfl-postsecondary-assessments/rpt

They are administered by LTI: https://www.languagetesting.com/lti/product/selectTest/client_id/228/lang_id/7130?

ACE recommends them for college credit: https://www.acenet.edu/National-Guide/Pages/Organization.aspx?oid=c0089b28-9016-e811-810f-5065f38bf0e1&k=(NGStatusCodeOWSTEXT%3D%22Active%22)

Review the options you have thought of and the options provided to you in the thread and see which one is better for you, you can do a combo of them if you have the energy, money, time to spend towards learning these languages and doing the exams for them, if it's not a problem for you that is...
