  Head start during HS
Posted by: HeritageCreek - 06-07-2025, 06:38 AM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (3)

Hi all!

New to the forum. I've been reading posts - lots of great info and support here! Thank you!!

Backstory: I earned a BA in Communications from TESU in 2008. Took me 18 months using CLEP/DSST/TECEP and TESU courses. Great experience.

Fast forward to 2025. I have a highly motivated 15yo that's interested in the finance world. The kid loves numbers - he sets his alarm for 5am so he can study. We homeschool. He's nearly completed his high school requirements. I'm looking for options to challenge him and give him a head start on college.

Long-term we're looking at TESU's BSBA in Finance degree once he turns 18. Definitely open to other options.

CLEPS: this is what I know best from personal experience. Also going to look into Sophia courses.

The RA requirement is new since I was a student and is a little confusing to me...how do I know if a course is RA or not?

Does anyone know how Dual Enrollment works as a homeschooler? We live in MI. Are there affordable online options for this?

Any other tips/advice would be much appreciated! Thank you!!

  What degree to pursue?
Posted by: musubiman - 06-06-2025, 10:45 PM - Forum: Doctorate Degree Discussion - Replies (3)

Hi all,

Having trouble deciding what degree to pursue next. I enjoy studying how people learn and are motivated in the workplace so want to stick to something that ties into that. Currently working at a brokerage firm and have a MBA and about to finish a BA in I/O Psychology, but am wanting to pursue the degree mostly for personal satisfaction. With that I am thinking business, psychology, or education all could be tied into what I like.

I can't justify taking a mortgage sized pay cut and my licenses lapsing so I am limited to programs that will let me continue to work full time. DBA programs seem to be the friendliest to outside work, but I do not have a lot of management experience yet so not the most competitive candidate. Is a DBA probably the best option to pursue or would one of the few PhDs that allows me to work make more sense?

Get an AAS (for UMPI BAS) or just go straight for Bachelors elsewhere?
Posted by: JDawsonMunger - 06-06-2025, 05:18 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (5)

- Your Location: Miami, FL
- Your Age: 26
- What kind of degree do you want?: Whatever makes the most sense. I think I want an AAS degree to transfer into the BAS in Business Administration from UMPI. I've also looked into TESU and Liberty.
- Current Regionally Accredited Credits: 60 credits from Miami Dade College (completed general AA degree with some business electives), 3 credits from Florida International University (Intro to Marketing Course), 14 credits from Moody Bible Institute (Philosophy course and the rest is probably elective credit)
- Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: SL: American Government and Introduction to Religion - SDC: Business Ethics, Princ of Management, Microeconomics, and Managerial Accounting
- Any certifications or military experience?: Securities Industry Essentials and Series 6 from FINRA
- Budget: Cheaply as possible
- Commitments: Currently half-time (6 credits) finishing remainder of courses, some financial planning on the side, and other side-gig work
- Dedicated time to study: Probably 30 hours a week
- Timeline: ASAP
- Tuition assistance/reimbursement: Pell Grant until 2026-2027 school year

Question Degree Guidance based on these interests:
Posted by: NeuralFlow - 06-06-2025, 03:56 PM - Forum: Graduate School Discussion - Replies (1)

Would anyone have online MSc Degree recommendations for me based on my interests/activity:

I have always enjoyed in-depth science, especially from an electron flow perspective. Such as signal analysis of how electronics interact with substrate and quantify electron flow into describable phenomena or how computation can be found everywhere, things around intelligence and agency in systems, technical systems in general, electronic components, biological physiology and am very well equipped in the physical sciences both from formal academia and from all this being a personal hobby for over a decade and not having much life outside of it.

I day dream about stuff similar to Micheal Levin's work around bioelectric systems and re-interpretating collective intelligence schemas and how to model them. Joscha Bach, I've re-listened to his lectures since COVID, thinking of his proposals daily and his text book Principles of Synthetic Intelligence was fun to review and think about it, probably didnt understand all it had to offer though.

I've taken alot of outside-of-academia courses like a few month program for programming with R , CompTIA certs, many coursera stuff, and alot of years of 'play' which taught me alot of tools and how things work across computing stuff. I also have played alot with electrolysis experiments using a re-wired PC PSU and different anodes for things like ewaste, playing with metals and stuff. I have a strong grasp on biology, math and chemistry

And of course I'd like it to lead to employment with survival wages at least...but everyone else wants that too and its getting rarer and rarer...So might as well just follow my person interest path either way.

I'm looking for online MSc programs, open to reasonable online PhD programs, but mostly looking at MSc for now.

Types of degrees I've liked when looking at so far:
Computational Biology/Bioinformatics
Computational Life Sciences
Biomimicry
Cognitive Architecture content
Electronic Engineering

with computational approach rather than biotechnology, theres a better chance I can use virtual environments for compute resources to play around with stuff im learning about and exploring. Compared to biotechnology which may be a bit more equipment focused, that I may never see in real life and certainly couldnt afford for myself to explore. So thats why I havent leaned too much into BioTechnology programs

I have a BSc in environmental management systems and a MSc in financial planning (it was free and i did it, but ive never worked in finance and having the MS without experience, networks, hasnt gotten me anywhere in applying to many types of positions...I go hard on job applications and do them often, but i live in a semi-rural town and am not equipped to leave for another year or two). Currently I work in a dishroom and call center for a hospital, COVID upturned my life bad.

Any insights or explicit rules/laws around titles and eligilibilities in this industry are also appreciated, if any.

Thanks !

UMPI BA PM & IS Degree Plan
Posted by: AG101 - 06-06-2025, 12:39 PM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (4)

Hello everybody,

Thank you for all of your contributions with assisting members to get their degree. After the recent changes at UMPI regarding Sophia, I just want to verify my plan before proceeding. Attached is my degree plan and a simple alternative credit sheet after checking the UMPI DB and the forum. My plan is to transfer in the Gen ED and do most of my major with UMPI. Some uncertain transfer is 2D, 3A, and BUS 150. Please advise if any changes are needed. Is the Coursera course worth doing compared to UMPI? What is the speed timeline difference if using Sophia versus doing UMPI?

Very Respectfully,
AG101

Current Regional Accredited Credits: N/A
Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: N/A
Any certifications or military experience?: N/A

I'm looking for a doctorate in psychology that has no campus visits or clinicals/internships. I need an academic psychology degree not a licensure or counseling. Actual psychology to be used in academia. I cannot travel even for a short term campus visit. Doesn't matter how long the degree takes.
I will take any and all options presented to explore and hopefully nail down one ASAP.

(Yes I'm starting to second guess that DA in English Pedagogy and hence looking for something in Psychology to be in cohesion with my other degrees)

Fastest & Easiest TESU BALS road map? (Not sure if Wiki is up to date)
Posted by: sharsharky - 06-05-2025, 10:49 AM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (2)

My daughter is 18, just graduated high school and plans to ultimately get a Masters in Library Science from University of Maryland. She is taking 4 classes at our local community college to establish a high GPA (to be able to potentially qualify for scholarships for her masters. The courses she is taking is: English Composition, Cultural Identity in America- Race, Class, Gender and Society, Ceramics I and Intro to Sociology
She wants to utilize all of the available non-traditional credit sources to test out of her Bachelor's degree as quickly as possible. She plans to get her degree from TESU. I checked the wiki and saw a variety of different degree plans. Are those up to date? She would love to have a major, but is fine just getting a Liberal Studies degree if it's significantly faster.
If anyone can point me in the direction of a road map that is current and up to date, I'd be endlessly appreciative! Thanks so much.

Which One Would You Pick: Harvard Extension ALM or UIUC iMSM?

If you had to choose between the Harvard Extension School’s ALM in Management and the UIUC iMSM program, which one would you go for and why? I’m weighing both in terms of learning experience, recognition, and future opportunities. Would love to hear your thoughts!r
